We at the San Diego News Network understand how important Margaret “Midge” Costanza was to San Diego County, the U.S. and the world. We also know the impact she had on our nation’s justice system. With that said, SDNN would like to dedicate its collection of stories for Women’s History Month to Midge because without her contributions — many of us wouldn’t have the opportunities we have today.

I have a few questions about this section: Why is “Women’s History” linked to the SDNN Politics section?

Is there something political about “women’s” history that is different from history in general?

And when will we stop needing to distinguish “women’s” from “men’s” history? Without women- and one woman in particular for each of us- we would have no history at all. (Thanks to all the mom’s out there!)

Hi Lori,

Thanks for your message. I love and appreciate that you take the time to read our articles and comment, too!

Honestly, Women’s History Month is filed under “Politics” because I’m the editor overseeing the work. Additionally, because “Politics” is one of the more popular sections on SDNN, I thought it would be a great way to utilize my “power” to increase awareness about the importance of the month. Often times, even if it is disappointing, issues involving sex are political.

I don’t know when we’ll be able to end the need of distinguishing “women’s history” from “history” itself. But it starts with talking about the lack of equality (not just between women and men but between all people) and I’m proud to have that conversation on SDNN’s Politics page.

Best,
Hoa

Hoa,
I agree with your logic.

The word “HIStory” – his story – sums up the need for women’s history month and the rewriting of American history in general. Elementary and high school texts may have small subsections devoted to historical women, but the majority of texts focus on government and world events of which women were often excluded. Women’s history month, like black history month, is an outward “apology” ~ if you will ~ for the categorical omission of underrepresented American’s contributions to our nations story.

To Lori ~ we will not need these months if and when the story of our nation can be told by all without being white-washed and dependent upon masculine values to determine which stories are worthy of remeberance.

Peace,
Ashley
