Sewage spill contaminates San Diego River outlet

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

SAN DIEGO – Contamination warnings were posted Wednesday at the San Diego River outlet in Ocean Beach following a sewage spill in Linda Vista.

The spill, caused by grease blocking a main sewer line, occurred about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at 7011 Linda Vista Road, near Ulric Street, said Brian Drummy of the city’s Public Utilities Department.

About 4,150 gallons of sewage spilled from the line, contaminating the Dog Beach area of Ocean Beach, he said.

Crews working until about 8:15 p.m. were able to capture all but an estimated 1,025 gallons, which flowed into a storm drain that leads into the San Diego River, Drummy said.

Warning signs will remain posted until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.

Beach closure information can be obtained by calling a 24-hour hotline at (619) 338-2073.
