Empowering Parents believes that all children should have the choice of attending college.
In order for your child to be eligible for a four-year university, it’s important that they fulfill the California A-G college requirements that consist of 15 to 18 courses that are required by the California State University and the University of California higher education systems. Remember that other states have similar college requirements. Check with the state’s Department of Education for the specific requirements.
If your child fulfills the A-G courses with a C or better, they will be eligible to attend most of the over 5,000 colleges and universities in this country. Taking the recommended years of a subject area in addition to the required years could increase your child’s chances of acceptance to the college of their choice.
It’s important for parents and students to know these requirements for themselves.
Here’s the A-G college requirement list:
A. History and Social Science
B. English
C. Mathematics
D. Laboratory Science
E. Language Other Than English
F. Visual and Performing Arts
G. College Preparatory Electives
For more details about the number of years required, watch the Empowering Parents video for the A-G Parent’s Style song. Also, visit www.ucop.edu/doorways for your child’s specific A-G course list based on the courses offered at their high school.
