Gaslamp Gal: Creative cocktails around town
Writing about scorpion bowls last week got me thinking about other specialty cocktails around the city that bring a whole new meaning to “top shelf.” I had a few ideas, but posed the question on Facebook and Twitter. Here are the good, the questionable, and the just plain funny, courtesy of my fab social media network … and a few taste tests of my own:
- I’ve been told Shakespeare’s Pub has some “innovative” drinks on its menu, which I hadn’t noticed in my few times visiting. Apparently the inclination to slurp suds and down bangers and mash at this English pub was somewhat misguided. The Black Velvet, a combination of champagne and Guinness, piqued my interest most. It sounds a bit girly, but acceptable to drink in the midst of avid footballers.
- This one deserves print just for its name: The Chuck Norris Roundhouse Kick To The Face. High five to whomever at Moondoggies came up with that mouthful! Speaking of mouthfuls, the mixture sounds like it’s hard to swallow: Jägermeister, Rumpletmintz and Tabasco. YIKES! My eyes are watering just thinking about it.
- Whisknladle takes a more refined approach to the “wowzer” drink, offering the La Jolla diner jalapeño puree sloshed with gin. Personally not a huge fan of the hot stuff, but I can see how this would be tasty. Side note: I hear the food’s super there.
- You can also try the Horny Monkey at Mr. Tiki’s Mai Tai Lounge. Who even cares what’s in it? I dare you to order it with a straight face!
- Speaking of ridiculous names, try the Bionic Beaver at Guava Beach. On special each Saturday for $12, the Beaver’s a half pitcher of Miller Light with some vodka and rum thrown in, and some grenadine for sweetness and to add unnatural, bright red color. Keepin’ it classy, Guava serves it in the pitcher with two long straws.

Some great ones! There are some other great drinks on the specialty menus at Syrah, Prohibition, Royal Thai (open until 3am!), and the huge Volcano at Peohe’s! Try them all in one night for a challenge
I’ll join you.

Great article… One of my favorite drinks (or double sized shot) is the ‘Especial’ from Aaron at The Fleetwood - it’s his specialty that he has been doing for years. If you ever see him stack 10-15 glasses on each other and starts pouring you’ll know that’s what he is making. If you have a group order a round from him.. guarantee you will love it..
