Surveillance footage of the alleged "Long Jaw Bandit," released by San Diego Police Dept.

The San Diego Police Department Wednesday released surveillance video and a photograph of a robbery suspect who has held up 10 local businesses.

The so-called “Long Jaw Bandit” is believed responsible for four robberies over last weekend, including a Radio Shack and Payless Shoe Source in the South Bay, a Staples in Kearny Mesa and an Albertsons supermarket in San Carlos.

Those holdups broke a layoff that lasted nearly two months. The man is also suspected of robberies in late August and early September, in various parts of town.

He’s described as black, between 35 and 45 years old, at least 6 feet 2 inches tall and more than 210 pounds, police said. He wears a baseball cap and sunglasses during his heists. The surveillance photograph shows him with a jutting chin that gave rise to his nickname.

Police said he generally goes into a store and shops for a few minutes, takes merchandise to the counter and tells the clerk he has a gun, though none has ever been seen. He then takes both cash and the goods.

Police said no one has been injured in any of the robberies.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s identity or wherebouts was asked to call the San Diego County Crime Stoppers’ anonymous toll-free tip line at (888) 580-8477, or send e-mail or a text message to sdcrimestoppers.com.

An award of $1,000 is available for information that leads to an arrest.
