Not all the news coming out of the Chargers 32-3 win in Denver is good.
Right tackle Jeromey Clary left the field on a cart with a left ankle injury which coach Norv Turner wouldn’t rule out as potentially season-ending.
“Jeromey Clary has a ligament strain,” Turner said. “It’s going to be a period of time before he’s able to play. We’ll know how serious it is over the next couple of days.
“I think that’d be premature [to rule him out for the season],” Turner continued. “But that is a concern of mine, yes.”
After struggling through the early season adjusting to the loss of center Nick Hardwick and right guard Louis Vasquez, the offensive line has found cohesion of late in pass protection and run blocking.
Vasquez returned to the lineup in Week 4 after missing a pair of games while Hardwick has not played since injuring his ankle in the season-opening game against the Raiders.
Rookie Brandyn Dombrowski will start in Clary’s stead. He started for Vasquez in weeks two and three and prepared to start for Clary on Sunday before Clary was ruled fit to play after a suffering a separate ankle injury.
“Dombrowski took all the snaps last week and we were prepared to play with Brandyn,” Turner said. “Once Jeromey was ready to go Friday, obviously we were going to go that route. It bought a week for Brandyn.”
Turner said Hardwick would likely practice this week in an attempt to get on the field for Sunday’s game against Kansas City. He’s tested his injured ankle for several weeks, but has been unable to return to action on a Sunday.
Defensive end Luis Castillo suffered a calf strain against Denver. Turner said it will likely be a late-week decision as to whether he’ll be able to play. He expects Shawne Merriman, who was in and out of Sunday’s game with a foot injury, to be ready to practice and play.
