A transient was stabbed twice in the chest by his girlfriend during an argument in City Heights, a San Diego police lieutenant said.

The two were arguing around 3 a.m. Sunday near a grocery store at 4365 University Ave. when the stabbing occurred, Officer David Stafford said.

The male victim sought help from a store security guard and was hospitalized with wounds that did not appear to be life-threatening, Stafford said.

SDPD Officer Jane Jacobsen said the stabber walked away from the area but was located and detained later in the morning.
