Two men were arrested after Hemet police, who were looking for someone displaying a gun, stopped the vehicle they were riding in and allegedly found drugs, said Sgt. James Anderson in a news release.

On Wednesday, the Hemet Police Department received a call for assistance from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a call of a male suspect with a gun chasing a female subject in the area of Santa Fe and Menlo Avenue.  The call also stated that two shots had been fired.

Hemet Police Officers, Hemet/San Jacinto Gang Task Force member, Hemet PD Crime Suppression Unit and Riverside County Deputies responded to the area and immediately began searching, Anderson said.  Updated information was received that a dark SUV was seen in the area.

Within a minute of the update, Hemet Police observed a dark colored SUV driving in the area.  An attempt to stop the vehicle was initiated but the vehicle continued driving very slowly and finally yielded in the parking lot to an apartment complex located at 1100 E. Menlo Avenue, Anderson said.  A high risk stop was conducted.  After the two suspects were detained, Anderson said, officers located almost four ounces of suspected methamphetamine inside the vehicle.  There was also more than $1,300 in cash located on one of the occupants.  The money is believed to have been profits from drug sales.

Arrested were Robert Chavez, 24 of Hemet and  Jose Espejo, 26 of Perris.  Both were booked on suspicion of possession of an illegal substance for sales and transportation of an illegal substance, Anderson said.  Chavez, who is on parole, is being held without bail.  Bail for Espejo was set at $55,000.

No evidence of the original call was located.
