Water use was down 9.5 percent citywide in October, compared to the same month last year, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders announced Wednesday.

Overall, San Diego residents have cut their water use by about 13 percent since the city imposed mandatory restrictions in June, according to the mayor’s office.

Sanders applauded San Diegans for heading the call to conserve water, but cautioned that now is not the time to become complacent.

“Make no mistake, all of us need to continue our vigilance in the months ahead,” Sanders said. “Now is not the time for complacency.

“I know that a lot of people think we are entering into the winter season so we don’t need to worry about water usage and that’s simply not true,” he said.

Following the declaration of a “level 2″ drought by the City Council early this summer, mandatory water restrictions were imposed in San Diego.

Residents are only allowed to water their lawns and landscaping three days a week, on designated days, before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m., for seven minutes at a time.

Most people are complying, Sanders said. However, there have been 3,100 complaints about scofflaws, and five water customers have been given warning citations. So far, nobody has been fined.

I used to live in California and moved away when Gray Davis was busy mishandling the whole Enron and energy sharing debacle. I do remember one story that sort of sums up what a bunch of idiots live in California. There was a story about a whale that beached itself for some unknown reason. The State was frantic about “saving this poor whale!” They spent 1 million dollars with special equipment to build water tanks and dikes around the whale and helicopters to lift the whale with special lifting straps and “trained specialized personnel” to go along with the efforts. One million dollars wasted. God forbid this money would go to jobs or a library or social services help. I really hope there is a good earthquake over there to give you morons a sense of purpose.
