Coroner identifies couple killed in I-15 wreck
A husband and wife in their 60s who were killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 15 north of Escondido were identified Saturday by the coroner.
Florencio Quiroz Serrano, 64, and Dionisia Lopez-Rodriguez, 63, were passengers in an SUV that blew a tire and rolled down an embankment Monday evening, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The coroner did not provide their hometowns, but the California Highway Patrol indicated they were from Mexico.
The 2002 Chevy Trailblazer, driven by Ramon Arciniega, 40, of Upland, was traveling north just past Deer Springs Road, when the tread peeled off the left rear tire, said CHP Officer Eric Newbury.
The driver hit the brakes but the SUV went over the right shoulder and rolled down an embankment, overturning several times before coming to rest on its roof, blocking Champagne Boulevard, which runs parallel to the freeway, he said.
Quiroz Serrano and Lopez-Rodriguez died at the scene. Arciniega and another passenger, Evangelina Quiroz, 52, of Upland, were transported to Palomar Medical Center, Newbury said.
