Military officials released the name Tuesday of a 23-year-old active-duty Marine who was killed in a motorcycle crash just outside Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, where he was stationed.

Sgt. Michael Martins of Cape Coral, Fla., was fatally injured Friday morning when the driver of an eastbound Lexus sedan made a left turn directly in the path of his oncoming Yamaha motorcycle on Miramar Road, near Camino Ruiz, according to San Diego police and the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

Witnesses performed CPR on the serviceman — who was wearing a helmet when the collision occurred — until paramedics arrived and took over for them.

Despite the prompt lifesaving attempts, he was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

Martins was an intelligence specialist assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, according MCAS Miramar’s public affairs office.

His military commendations included an Iraq Campaign Medal and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
