Man dubbed ‘Sunset Bandit’ to be arraigned

An Escondido man dubbed the “Sunset Bandit” and accused of carrying out more than two dozen armed robberies in San Diego County is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.

Joel Chacon, 32, is believed responsible for nine holdups in the city of San Diego, seven in Oceanside, two in Escondido and nine in San Marcos and Vista, according to prosecutors.

Authorities believe the suspect was involved in the following robberies in San Diego:

– Aug. 9 at Quizno’s Sub Shop on Carmel Mountain Road in Rancho Penasquitos;
– Aug. 13 at Panera Bread restaurant on Westview Parkway in Mira Mesa, and;
– Aug, 16 at an El Pollo Loco on Scripps Poway Parkway in Miramar Ranch.

Police said the thief displayed a pistol tucked in his waistband during many of the robberies.
