SDSU brush fire investigated as arson

A brush fire that burned about three acres of a canyon where homeless people sleep near San Diego State University was being investigated Sunday as arson, police said.
The blaze began about 5:20 p.m. Saturday near Abode Falls Road in the Del Cerro area, said San Diego police Officer David Stafford.
Two helicopters, piloted by firefighters with night-vision goggles, made about 15 drops of fire-suppression material onto the flames in an effort to protect nearby homes, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
The blaze was quickly put out by 45 firefighters, according to the newspaper, but flare-ups in the deep brush continued for hours.
“It’s difficult terrain,” Maurice Luque, spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, told the Union-Tribune. “It’s hard for crews to get in there.”
The Union-Tribune said embers drifted onto one home, but caused little damage.
No one was injured, Stafford said.
The canyon belongs to the university and campus police are handling the arson investigation, Stafford said.
Luque told the Union-Tribune that there is a homeless camp in the area.

A friend and I are actually the ones who found the homeless camp. Today we were down in the canyon checking out the damage, and we found some tents with a few propane tanks around. It looked like the fire had started right at that location, so we informed a fire investigator. Kinda disappointing they took credit for it, we were down there looking for hours.
