Suspected drunk driver wraps car around tree

A suspected drunken driver was seriously injured Saturday when his truck drifted off the road and slammed into a tree, police said.

Around 5:15 a.m. today, a homeowner reported to police that a truck collided with a tree on the 500 block of Idaho Avenue, said Escondido police Lt. Chris Wynn.

When police arrived, they did not find any witnesses and the driver was unable to provide any information regarding the crash, according to Wynn.

The driver, a 27-year-old Escondido resident, was taken to a local hospital and remains in critical condition, Wynn said. The driver sustained chest injuries, significant facial fractures and wounds.

Based on physical evidence from the scene, investigators believe the driver was traveling eastbound on Idaho Avenue and drifted off the roadway and struck a tree, according to Wynn.

This is why it is important we continue to have more DUI checkpoints. Being a resident on this street & knowing where this person slammed into the tree, we are lucky it was not into somebody’s residence.
