Thieving mailman gets 3 years probation
A veteran postal carrier who took Target gift cards out of greeting cards and had his domestic partner cash them was sentenced today to three years probation and barred from delivering mail for a living.
Peter Hinojos, 49, was convicted Oct. 5 of three felony counts of receiving stolen property. He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Albert Harutunian, who suspended a 180-day jail sentence.
Deputy District Attorney Christopher Lawson said Hinojos, who had been a postal carrier for more than 18 years, had access to five different mail routes.
It was uncertain how much money was lost, the prosecutor said. Hinojos has no prior felony convictions, but has a misdemeanor assault conviction from 2001, Lawson said.
