There’s a new Sheriff in town. He doesn’t swagger, but he’s earned the right to.
Our newly appointed Sheriff of San Diego County, Bill Gore, looks like an old-fashioned man, yet his skills are modern. Bringing 40 years experience in law enforcement, Gore now oversees 4,000 employees while managing the department’s annual budget of about $600 million.
Simultaneous to being appointed Sheriff, Gore is campaigning to win this position in our 2010 County elections. His appointment is a unique opportunity for us to see him in action, to test his expertise in the job he wants to keep. The combined challenge of County wide budget cuts effecting a diverse population under the strain of tough times is no easy task. Especially when Gore has publicly claimed his main goal is to make San Diego County the safest major County in California.
His extensive career in the FBI earned him many accolades, as well as a wife! His wife Natalie made history as one of the first female FBI agents in the country. Outside his family history of siblings, a parent and his wife being in law enforcement, Sheriff Gore has proven his professional tactics increase safety within law enforcement- through low-force arrest trainings and consistent review of all internal practices that effect the public. He has a reputation for being tech savvy in both information technologies and the growing infiltration of computer hackers.
When it comes to issues effecting women especially, we notice his expertise in handling violent crimes like domestic violence and homicide, and his outreach to women victims of rape. He has proven to be pro-active in organizing teams such as the Sheriff’s Department new Sex Crimes Investigation Unit, along with special efforts to protect crime victims and solve cold cases.
Our immediate interest in Gore is in his relation to keeping women safe in San Diego County. We have invited him as our guest at our upcoming 51% Meet & Greet on November 10. We founded 51%-A Woman’s Place Is In Politics in Spring 2009 to address the needs of getting women involved in influencing the policy makers who in turn influence women. “We,” of course, are Lisa N. Sanders, daughter of Mayor Jerry Sanders and Tryce Czyczynska, writer and host of Coffee & Conversation With Cool Women. It’s generally believed that females total 51% of the global population and as such, deserve a prominent voice in politics and policies affecting women, men and youth.
Participants at our Meet & Greet will learn how the County addresses the needs of local women, why the job of Sheriff is an elected position and how to work with officials to ensure women are protected from crime.
More by Tryce and Lisa: Combating violence against women | “Old” isn’t a four-letter word | Women, it’s all about dollars and sense
Lisa comes from a family of law enforcement professionals. Her father was San Diego Police Chief; her Mom was an undercover agent in New York. Tryce comes from the other side of law, the violence and drugs in and around her family often led to law enforcement intervention. Both of us hold law enforcement professionals in high regard and have a profound respect for the difficulties they face on a regular basis.
As Lisa explains, “Growing up with law enforcement in my family, I learned the importance of being involved. As a woman safety is especially important. That is why I am excited to have Sheriff Bill Gore as our next guest. Our members will be able to ask important questions of our Sheriff involving women’s safety and more.”
As women who are highly visible and active in our communities, Lisa and Tryce understand the need to prevent crime. We recognize the danger in leaving ourselves vulnerable to assault, and the power that comes from being knowledgeable in spotting potential danger. We are pro-active in crime prevention and in educating on how to find help if a crime occurs.
Having this knowledge accessible is why all Meet & Greet events hosted by 51% - A Woman’s Place is in Politics are free to attend, open to every one of all ages, and are non-partisan.
This Meet & Greet features the lounge-like setting of Universal Hillcrests’ Garden Patio. We begin with a half hour social including informal introductions by both Lisa and Tryce, followed by a half hour live interview of Sheriff Gore, by Tryce. The event closes with an additional hour mixer. Participants are encouraged to speak with and ask questions of Sheriff Gore, both one-on-one and through the hosted interview.
We provide Voter Registration for all participants at our events. We know that casting your vote is one of the best ways to influence policy makers.
This is a free public forum for women to get involved in politics, to talk directly with politicians and policy makers, and to connect with other women interested in bettering women’s lives. We can’t wait to introduce Gore and to meet you in person! Please join us, at Universal Hillcrest in San Diego, Tuesday, November 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
