Former wrestling coach to be sentenced on child porn charges
A former volunteer wrestling coach at Westview High School who pleaded no contest to sending pornography to a minor was scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday.
Ryan Carnell sent a picture of his penis to a 16-year-old girl, who attended the Torrey Highlands school. The coach, who is in his late 20s, was also accused of furnishing marijuana to a minor, but that charge was dropped following a preliminary hearing in July.
During the hearing, the girl testified that she met Carnell when she was a freshman after becoming a statistician for Westview’s wrestling team, and that the relationship turned a “lot more personal” her sophomore year.
She said she exchanged text messages with Carnell up to 10 hours a day. In February and March, Carnell began texting her messages of a more sexual nature, leading up to one that included a photograph of his penis and the message, “Don’t be disappointed,” according to the girl’s testimony.
Carnell was arrested this past spring after the girl’s friend told a teacher about the message.
