‘Baja Ha-Ha’ sailors depart from Shelter Island

San Diegans lined the coast of Shelter Island Monday morning to see off a flotilla of nearly 200 sailboats as they left the harbor for the start of the 16th annual “Baja Ha-Ha Cruisers Rally.”
The rally is a leisurely 750-mile, 12-day, timed race from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, with stops in Turtle Bay and Bahia Santa Maria.
This is an event for sailors looking for a good time and a comfortable ride down the coast. It sure started out that way, as most of the crafts’ occupants waved goodbye to San Diego and celebrated the launch of the rally.
If you would like to take part in next year’s rally, all you need is a 27-foot open ocean worthy vessel, and a buddy.

Why not assign a photo-journalist to go on one of the boats and file daily stories?
That might make for some nice packages, and the reporter could go with one of the skippers from San Diego…for a local angle.
Besides that, you have the potential for some adventurous human-interest stories and photogs.
