The Padres are making steps toward hiring Boston Red Sox assistant general manager Jed Hoyer as their next general manager, according to a report from ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Hoyer has worked under Boston general manager Theo Epstein since 2006 and would replace the fired Kevin Towers if the deal goes through.

New CEO/majority owner Jeff Moorad fired Towers at the end of the regular season after 14 years with the team.

In the meantime, Boston.com is reporting that Towers has a standing offer from Epstein to work as a special assistant or scout. Towers, who is expected to find another general manager job, still has one year remaining on his Padres contract.

In addition, Dodgers assistant general manager Kim Ng has interviewed for the Padres GM job. A woman has never held an MLB general manager post.
