San Diego environmental leaders will gather Friday and Saturday for the Bright Green Future conference at UCSD Price Center. The event is organized by San Diego EarthWorks’ Carolyn Chase, founder of San Diego’s annual Earth Day celebration.
Sessions are divided into several distinct tracks focusing on topics such as personal energy footprints; business and economy; climate change and green building; and how federal stimulus funding will affect energy issues in San Diego. There will be discussions on the growing “green jobs” sector and tips on getting around the city without a car.
“The Bright Green Future Conference is the place for San Diegans to meet leading experts in green issues: jobs and job training, energy, climate change, green building, local food and the latest in greywater,” Chase said. “There’s truly something for everyone and it’s really exciting that we’re able to present the Saturday programs for free on the International Day of Climate Action.”
Guest speakers include Prince Albert II of Monaco, who will receive the Scripps Institute of Oceanography’s Roger Revelle Prize on Friday evening for his foundation’s efforts to protect the marine environment. The prince will address evolving approaches to global climate change at the 5 p.m. ceremony and lecture, which will be followed by a special reception and dinner at 6 p.m.
California State Senator Christine Kehoe will launch the weekend welcome on Friday morning at 9. The keynote speaker is Panama Bartolomy, advisor to the California Energy Commission, discussing the potential impact of stimulus funds on our region. Sempra Energy, the San Diego Workforce Partnership and the US Green Building Council will be represented.
Organizers anticipate at least 300 attendees, while more than 80 speakers are scheduled. On-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m.; a continental breakfast will be available. Main sessions run until 5:15 p.m. both days.
Although there is no charge for Saturday’s programs, tickets for Friday cost $75 for general admission. For Friday’s events, student tickets are $20. Friday morning (including lunch) admission is $$55; and Friday afternoon alone is $45. Tickets can be purchased on-site. Volunteer applications are still being accepted.
Tickets for the Prince Albert lecture are $20; with the post-award event starting at $500 per plate.
A “green networking” cocktail party is scheduled for Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., where speakers and guests can mingle over appetizers and a no-host bar, at a cost of $20.
On-campus parking is $7 on Friday, free on Saturday, with shuttles available to the Price Center venue.

Chase has been selected as a member of the Sierra Club delegation headed to Copenhagen, Denmark for the COP15 United Nations global climate change negotiations. She will be blogging directly from the conference, which will take place from Dec. 7-18.
