Pending surgery has led the Chargers to place reserve outside linebacker Antwan Applewhite on injured reserve.
Applewhite hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury against Oakland in the season opener. He aggravated the injury in practice last week and now will miss the remainder of the season.
“Antwan Applewhite will have surgery on his hamstring some time in the next few days,” coach Norv Turner said on Tuesday. “We’ve added corner Dante Hughes, who was a third-round pick in 2007.”
A former All-American at Cal, Hughes played 24 games as a reserve for the Colts before being cut at the end of training camp this season. He will help shore up a secondary unit depleted when safety Clinton Hart was cut last week.
Linebacker Larry English, offensive lineman Louis Vasquez and linebacker Kevin Burnett all suffered minor injuries in Monday’s loss to Denver. Turner was optimistic that all three would be able to play in Sunday’s game at Kansas City despite the short week of recovery following a Monday game.
Punter Mike Scifres is still hampered by a lingering groin injury that Turner speculates will last through the rest of the season.
“I would think it would be — I think he would have soreness,” Turner said of Scifres’ likely post-game prognosis as the season continues.
A low punt from Scifres on Monday led to a return for a touchdown by Denver’s Eddie Royal.
