Loud, raucous crowd combats Westboro Baptist Church
Armed with a message of God’s wrath and “imminent doom,” six members of the Westboro Baptist Church staged a peaceful protest outside San Diego High School Friday, but were overshadowed by a large counter-demonstration chanting messages of love and tolerance.
Hundreds turned out to try to silence Westboro’s members, who wore shirts with the church’s URL — GodHatesFags.com — on them. Members of the Topeka-based congregation also carried colorful signs that read, “America is Doomed,” “Antichrist Obama is Doomed” and — with no explanation — “You Will Eat Your Babies.”
One block north of Westboro’s demonstration, the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Hillcrest staged a quiet, prayerful counter-protest, with signs that read, “God is Love.” Directly across from Westboro’s members, a large, raucous crowd of mostly gay rights supporters gathered shouting into bullhorns and banging on pots and pans, and waving signs that read “I Support Gay Rights and God Loves Me,” “We are all One” and “Hate is Not a Family Value.”
The 2:10 p.m. demonstrations were timed with the end of classes at the downtown high school, and students who streamed out onto sidewalks were greeted with the combating messages. Some were unfazed, others shouted in support of the gay rights groups, and one student passing by the commotion said, “These faggots have got to go.”
Shirley Phelps-Roper, the oldest daughter of Westboro founder Fred Phelps, gave little in the way of explanation for why the church’s members are in San Diego for four days, demonstrating at 29 locations. The church is targeting primarily Jewish-owned businesses, Jewish organizations and temples.
Phelps-Roper said the church is touring the country, trying to reach as many people as possible and that Westboro’s presence at San Diego High School was an opportunity for the school’s students to “see what good looks like.” She also said the congregation’s members were there to tell the students there was “no mercy” and warn the students “destruction is imminent.”
When asked what she’d like to tell the students, Phelps-Roper said, “Get a Bible, read the word, shut your mouth and obey your God.”
On Westboro’s Web site, the church listed San Diego High School as a demonstration location and said, “Quit Telling Kids It’s OK to be Fags.”
Members of the San Diego High School Gay Straight Alliance were among the counterdemonstrators. The teen activists said Westboro’s planned protest boosted the club’s membership on campus.
Emersen Phillips, a 17-year-old lesbian who attends San Diego High School, said the counterdemonstration made her feel “empowered.”
“I hear what [Westboro's members] have to say, and I acknowledge it, but it doesn’t have anything to do with,” she said. “I can be whoever I want to be.”
Krysteena Ferguson, a 17-year-old senior at San Diego High and a “straight ally” for her gay classmates, said countering Westboro’s demonstration with a message of tolerance sends a message to youth who struggle with their sexuality.
“It is really important to be who you are, and not deny it,” she said.
Drew Garner, a 14-year-old heterosexual freshman at San Diego High, said he was “enraged” by Westboro’s demonstration. Garner said he has friends and family friends who are gay, and he supports gay rights.
Garner said Westboro’s anti-gay, anti-America, anti-Obama signs were “ridiculous.”
“They’re not changing anyone’s minds here,” he said.
Arvid Straube, lead minister of the First Unitarian Universalist Church, said members of his congregation turned up Friday to send an “affirming” message to San Diego High’s gay students.
“We wouldn’t have given this any energy at all, but we wanted to show our support for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) students, and show them not all religious groups think that there is something wrong with them,” Straube said.
The San Diego Police Department was on hand to monitor the demonstrations and direct foot traffic in the congested area. There were no incidents of violence and no arrests made, though one counter-demonstrator shook with rage and shouted at Phelps-Roper until police officers escorted him away.Phelps-Roper said the church’s protests are always peaceful.
“For 19 years, every single day we stand on the streets; we are peaceful, we are lawful, and above all else, we are faithful to the good word of God,” Phelps-Roper said.

WBC, listen up:
Why do you focus on hating god’s children? Is it because you claim they hate you? Or are you implying God hates them? What if the gays and Jews of the world did unto you as you do unto them. Speaking profane ideas about HATE and that God’s children should burn in hell. Gays and Jews are God’s children too! Why must you focus on the ancient ways, im sure you and your ancestors were the ones who wanted slavery and denied Ms. Parks her seat in the front. You were the ones who claimed blacks are evil, democracy is evil, change is evil, difference is evil, knowledge is evil, and finally love is evil. WBC, go back and do God’s work by helping others rather than hurting them. Go feed the hungry instead of feeding others with your misconstrued ideas. Help the poor, the needy and the poor children who are helpless. If you took all your time and energy and money (ie traveling expenses to protest) and focused that on helping others, you would be doing God’s word and helping others. But instead you chose to ignore Him. Continue to ignore God’s request, continue to plague the world with your thoughts and ideas. Why must you piece together verses from the bible so that they “fit” your truth and beliefs. Not everyone believes the same ideologies. People believed the world was flat at one time, yet im sure the astronauts in space would disagree. The bible was meant to be interpreted as a historical story, to guide individuals to be moral and sound. Please Do Not to take verses, construe them to your hateful liking and continue with an evil rampage to teach the world about your misguided truth.
Start with God’s words and love thy neighbor. Do not H8!

“There were no incidents of violence and no arrests made, though one counter-demonstrator shook with rage and shouted at Phelps-Roper until police officers escorted him away.”
I would be the person you are referring to. It might have been a good idea to quote what I said to her.
The mainstream press was all around Phelps-Roper and were not challenging her at all…just letting her spew her hate and I wanted to put her on the spot.
Being a person of faith myself hearing her use Christ’s name while ignoring all of the things he said about love and tolerance enraged me.
So in the confrontation I challenged her…and quite frankly caught her off guard,..which is what good mainstream media reporters should have been doing by the way (I am talking about the TV media not print)
I said “you just mentioned Jesus Christ…” She shouted over me and started repeating “Jesus Christ” and then finally screamed “He said to keep his commandments.”
My response was, “His commandment was to love your neighbor, teaching hate is not keeping his commandments.”
I was not escorted away. The San Diego Police always do a great job at these protests and they were doing their job to make sure the scene was safe for all.
Now the reason I confronted her and was indeed enraged is becaiuse in 2000, in east county, I was severely beaten by three youths- the youngest 16 and the oldest 21.
I was on the bus one night and they said I was looking at them “the wrong way”. The next night I got off the bus and was ambushed. They beat me with beer bottles in the face and according to the ER staff I was indeed lucky to survive the head trauma.
During the beating I was called fag, queer and I clearly remember one kid saying “God sends fags to hell.”
It may have not been the Phelps clan but whatever so-called church these kids parents attended eventually brought them into the homophobia fold.
These children were taught to hate by people like the Phelps clan.
Since that time I have become aware of at least five teenagers, who took their own lives because of religious based hate towards homosexuals.
The trouble is that no one in the media is reporting that part of the story.
Yes they are insane…yes they are hypocritical…they swear by the Jewish purity laws in Leviticus and yet hate Jews as well.
But the bigger story is the effect- either direct or indirect they have on similar churches of hate and on the family that the Christian right claims to protect.
As the demonstration went on at SDHS somewhere in America a gay kid was being called a fag and humiliated.
Somewhere in America a gay kid was being bat up because of his effeminate nature or presumed homosexuality. somewhere in America a gay kid was seriously considering suicide because they could no longer take the mental, physical and or verbal abuse.
Somewhere in America a gay teen was being kicked out of his or her home because God hates fags and mom and dad do too.
Think that is extreme or an exaggeration. I met two throwaway homeless teens- age 15 and 17 at the protest today.
The bigger story- aside from my own is the effect the poison spewed out by these people has not only on adults but on children as well.
While you report is the best I have seen thus far it would have been nice if more than NBC 7/39 pulled me aside to see just why I decided to confront Shirley Phelps-Roper.

God says hate the sin love the sinner,we are all sinners looking for God’s grace,John 3;16 says that God so loved the( world) that He gave His only begotten son that whoever shall believe in Him shall have eternal life.God did not come to save the perfect people but the opposite, those like you and me ,Jesus hung on a cross out of love, not hate,He says pray for those who persecute you,So Father God I lift up this group who delivers hate and confusion on who you are, please change their hearts and minds when they read your word.In Jesus Holy name I pray amen.

Joseph, thanks for writing about this! It proves that we all need to ensure that, while all opinions are heard, the perspective of a radical and misguided few don’t become the only voice heard! Thanks to the protesters who came out in a civilized manner to counter the WBC members!

The Soviets had it right: religion should have been suppressed long ago. It’s better for society and it strengthens religion by weeding out the posers and leaving the people of faith to carry on…quietly.

I had more time today to look for news stories. I have to say that this piece IS THE BEST WRITTEN. Most just skimmed the surface as if the appearance at a high school of WBC’s spokesdemon Shirley Phelps-Roper was a non-story.
I am glad there are independent news sources like SDNN to turn to for REAL news.
I started a new blog and wrote piece if you or anyone else is interested…also my video from the confrontation with Phelps-Roper is on the post as well.
Again thank you for writing more than just a couple of paragraphs like the local rag Union Trib did!

Four days in San Diego, sounds like a vacation that’s tax deductable to me. After all they are “preaching”. Spend an hour or two in front of a school or church, then go to the beach, shop, go to the zoo. Just have a wonderful time. And I’ll bet that if they wear their cute little t-shirts, they can deduct the admission fees also.

WBC I hope you know that God is watching your rediculous protest. You are NOT changing anybodys minds here. So go away because we are going to be what we want to be, no matter what!

The reference to “you will eat your babies” comes from the OT scripture: Lev 26:29. This is a warning to Israel that their disobedience would be punished with famine, resulting in starvation that would drive people to eating their kids. To keep a long story short. If we all lived by OT law today a constant sacrifice would have to be made to atone for sin. Now with the sacrifice of Christ (Messiah) we can afford to understand that sin is sin, but with the atoning blood of Jesus allows us to not be put to death by sins such as adultery, rebelliousness, homosexuality etc…. If these people choose to judge others by OT scriptures then they themselves will be judged in this manner. Let’s just say it will not be very pretty for them when they themselves are judged for being so judgemental.

Arthur – good to you have you back! The reaction to your story here is one of total disbelief. “Are gringos totally locos?” and “Have Americans gone mad?” We have our problems here too; our streets and water service will never reach American standards, the lights are out on most of our traffic signals, city services are abominable, but we can never hope achieve American’s high level of hate.
Saludos from Mexico

.” She also said the congregation’s members were there to tell the students there was “no mercy” and warn the students “destruction is imminent.”
Apparently she doesn’t read or believe in Jesus’ teaching. All we can do is pray that the Lord will give her knowledge and understanding of what she says she believes
