A caterer and party planner who shot her former TV news director-husband in their La Mesa home pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony charge of corporal injury to a spouse.

Kalisa Wells, 60, shot former KGTV Channel 10 news director Donald M. Wells, 55, in the hip on May 29 during an argument in their home in the 4400 block of Sheldon Drive. Wells pleaded guilty on the day her preliminary hearing was to go forward. She sobbed when El Cajon Judge William McGrath read a statement of facts into the record.

“She’s facing a maximum of 14 years in prison if the judge so chooses to send her to prison,” Deputy District Attorney Claudia Grasso said outside court. “She’s also eligible for probation.”

Donald Wells was released from the hospital four days after the shooting. A protective order is in place, but Kalisa Wells is allowed to e-mail and text her husband to discuss the dissolution of their marriage, the judge said. She is to be sentenced Nov. 20.
