Councilman DeMaio names a home town girl to be his RB council rep
Kelly Batten takes over from Chris Hansen
Kelly Batten, the daughter of the first family to buy a home in Westwood, will be connecting the Rancho Bernardo community with their councilman’s office. She is one of those “next generation RB kids” who have come home to raise their own families here. She and her husband, Patrick, are the parents of three daughters and they live in RB.
Kelly Batten has a claim to fame in the Rancho Bernardo story. “My parents were the first to buy a house in Westwood,” she said. That was before Kelly was born. She and her brother, Keith, grew up along with the community. Kelly went to Westwood Elementary School, Meadowbrook Middle School, and was a member of the second graduating class from a newly built and opened Rancho Bernardo High School.
She graduated from San Diego State with a degree in political science and went to work in public service. She worked for State Senator Jim Battin when Rancho Bernardo was part of his district, and after redistricting changed the boundaries she found herself commuting to Riverside County.
When Carl DeMaio was elected as Council 5 San Diego City Councilman, Kelly took a job on his staff and was again closer to home. Last week she added the assignment of Rancho Bernardo to the communities she works with and she says she is thrilled to be able “to give back to the community that gave so much to her.”
She will be taking over for Chris Hansen who has left DeMaio’s staff to travel in Latin America before returning to the world of elective politics.
