The Padres have landed five-tool Georgia high school prospect Donavan Tate.
SDNN confirmed that Tate, the No. 3 pick in the 2009 draft, arrived in San Diego on Monday and has reached an agreement with a signing bonus in the $6.2 million range, well beyond the MLB recommended $3.4 million for the No. 3 pick.
Agent Scott Boras had asked for $6.5 million.
Sources within the organization confirmed Tate’s arrival, but indicated he would not be made available to the media during Monday night’s game with the Cubs.

Tate, who had reported to preseason workouts at the University of North Carolina on Aug. 8, left Chapel Hill last Wednesday just prior to the beginning of full contact drills. He had been recruited to play football and baseball by UNC.
The Padres also secured deals with second-round outfielder Everett Sampson and fourth-round RHP Keyvius Sampson. With the signings, the Padres have come to terms with 14 of their top 15 picks in the first-year player draft just hours before the midnight deadline.
“This is a great day for our organization,” said Padres vice president of scouting and player development Grady Fuson. “All three players are incredibly talented, bringing youth and an immense ceiling to the Padres. The organization worked tirelessly to acquire these players and it is a tremendous accomplishment to add them to our system.”
The deals mark a turn for Padres management under new owner Jeff Moorad after developing a reputation of being stingy with draft picks under John Moores’ ownership.

I have watched this kid grow up. His mother Traci has done a remarkable job raising her only son to be a very humble and polite young man. Donavon, We are all very proud of you son, congratulations!! KB
