Strasburg nabs Golden Spikes award

Stephen Strasburg is a high-risk, high-reward prospect as the likely No. 1 pick in next week's draft.

Add another trophy to Stephen Strasburg’s case.

The former San Diego State standout and soon-to-be multi-millionaire as the No. 1 pick of the Washington Nationals took home the USA Baseball Golden Spikes award on Tuesday as the nation’s best collegeiate player in 2009.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Strasburg said through his former media handlers at SDSU in a speech that is quite familiar by now. “You look at all the players that have been past Golden Spikes winners, and to be considered in that caliber as a college player is just an amazing feeling for me.”

Strasburg, owner of the triple-digit fastball with pinpoint placement, previously was named a first-team All-American and National Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball, earned the Dick Howser trophy (another national player of the year honor) and was the two-time Mountain West pitcher of the year.

He’s the second Aztec to earn the Golden Spikes after first baseman Travis Lee in 1996 and will surely be missed by the red and black. Pitchers sporting a 1.32 ERA, 195 strikeouts and 13-1 record don’t come along too often.
