A 22-year-old man was jailed Friday after federal agents found nearly 80 pounds of marijuana hidden in the sport utility vehicle he drove into the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, authorities reported.

The San Ysidro resident pulled into the international inspection station in southeastern San Diego about 5:30 a.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection public affairs.

After a service dog indicated the presence of contraband in the 2008 Ford Edge, officers took the SUV to a secondary examination area, where they found 28 packages of cannabis stashed under the floor of the vehicle and in the center console, CBP officials said.

The driver, a U.S. citizen and member of a program that allows for expedited border-crossing for frequent travelers between the United States and Mexico, was booked into county jail in San Diego on suspicion of drug smuggling. His identity was withheld.
