Jason Owens: This media elite not apologizing to Sarah Palin

San Diego: Sarah Palin (AP photo)

Sarah Palin (AP photo)

I’m fighting back.

As a member of the self-important media elite, I’m weary of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her supporters pushing me around, tarnishing my good name.

Granted I usually stick to writing sports stories. I have never written a word about Palin and generally save my myriad political opinions for discussions over pints rather than text on your computer screen.

But when I read a headline touting the Alaska Governor’s decision to bail on her constituents as “brilliant” on the very Web site I work for, I couldn’t bite my tongue (ahem, my fingertips) anymore.

Palin is one of the nation’s most virulent political lightning rods for a reason. She is the line in the sand that separates America’s out-of-touch, silver-spoon ladling, chardonnay-sipping elite from the good hard-working people of the common class.

At least that’s the story from the Palin camp.

It’s a political strategy perfected and subsequently set back by the Bush Administration that’s morphed into a vocal minority voice on the heels of Obama’s victory last November.

Attack the liberally educated city dwellers and appeal to the “Real America” while actually working for the causes of the true white-collar elite. (And then complain about your $500,000 in legal fees). It’s brilliant.

Except it backfired last November. Joe the Plumber lost.

But Palin, a desperate last-ditch effort to bolster a flailing Republican campaign for the White House, won’t go away.

Her charm and good looks struck a chord with an electorate that will never be large enough to put her anywhere near the White House, but is powerful and vocal enough to keep her in the headlines.

It’s the same quick-trigger voice that’s determined to write off a six-month-old Obama Administration as ineffective and eager to rewrite the recent political history that created the slew of troubles we’re facing today.

It’s a desperate, unfocused Republican movement that’s miles away from its conservative roots and reeling from the failures of the Bobby Jindals and Mark Sanfords of the world to pan out as viable saviors.

San Diego: Jason Owens is the SDNN sports editor.

Jason Owens

And now Palin has thrown out the wildest of wild cards, forcing her supporters to scramble and spin in the face of one simple fact. She quit. On the very people that elected her. Because of claimed negative outside influences and media scrutiny.

San Diego: sdnn-opinion6And she wants to be President?!

Maybe she doesn’t. Maybe she just wants to sell books and genuinely wants to escape the pressure. While her tactics are similar to the Karl Rove/Bush machine, her motivations and politics haven’t been shown to be as dishonest.

Whatever the case, her decision has left her supporters stuck to swallow their shock and take on TV cameras fawning admiration for her moxie and political gamble.

Never mind that she was exposed as unprepared and unqualified any time she wasn’t protected by hers or John McCain’s media handlers during the campaign for the White House.

That was a long time ago. File the Katie Couric interviews in the same cabinet with the fact that the outpouring of bailout money actually started with the Bush Administration.

But I digress.

Palin has now disappeared, in hiding from the scrutiny after dropping her bombshell on a Friday of a holiday weekend.

She’s already used her children as a shield, going as far as to poll all five of them on whether she should stop performing her sworn duties as governor.

When she got four yeses and “one hell yeah,” she was a few folksy fishing and basketball analogies away from quitting her job. (By the way — how’s that for a disservice to mothers in the world of politics who draw fire about where their priorities lie… I wanted to keep being your governor, but my kids didn’t think it was a good idea).

Now she’s hiding behind the veil of being the victim of the bulldog media elite. But unlike the pit-bull with lipstick that she claimed to be, she decided to run away from the fight.

I’m aware that this type of criticism fans the flames of elitist criticism. I’m sure any readers of opposing viewpoints chalk this up as another rant from the snarky media.

Well, maybe it is. But that doesn’t make me or any of Palin’s critics out of touch. I come from a humble background, got a public education and make a modest salary as a journalist in an industry struggling as much as any other in this economy.

I also have an educated and vocal point of view. And I’ll be damned if I’m going to apologize for it.

Jason Owens is the SDNN sports editor.

Good for you, Jason!

Comment by: Icarus Posted: July 7, 2009, 2:24 pm

Keep up the good fight! If those meanie Alaskan bloggers managed to get rid of her, maybe nationwide bloggers can do the same.

Comment by: Suzanne Maineri Posted: July 7, 2009, 2:34 pm

Beautifully stated. Thank you.

Comment by: Denise Posted: July 7, 2009, 3:58 pm

I think you are my new hero! Hear hear. A nice piece of writing and I couldn’t agree with you more. She embarrasses me as a working woman. When the going gets tough…quit!

Comment by: Frank Posted: July 7, 2009, 4:21 pm

Yeah, Sarah Palin has left Alaskan Politics and will never be heard from again! I see your point regarding her lack of political bravado and talent but she does look good with or without a stripper pole most male voters see her on.

Comment by: Donna Posted: July 7, 2009, 5:21 pm

Palin criticized Hillary Clinton for whining about the media: http://ow.ly/gJoH Now she whines about her own treatment. She whines about the politics of personal destruction but she is master of attack politics. She went beyond partisan politics on the campaign trail to vicious personal attacks. She made accusations she knew to be untrue in the name of politics. She threw hissy fits of faux outrage over jokes she deliberately misperceived. She cynically paraded her children on stage and on the campaign trail and then claimed they were off limits. Those who unofficially diagnose her as having a narcissistic personality disorder were right. I wish her resignation would take her off the public stage. Alas, she’ll either make millions on book deals and media tours or as a media commentator or worse yet, she’ll run for President.

Comment by: Jan Rieger Posted: July 7, 2009, 8:44 pm

Jason, we need you writing about more than sports! This piece was spot on. Loved it.

Comment by: Lynette Posted: July 7, 2009, 8:47 pm

Jason,
Get a life. Sarah is real, she loves her family, she isn’t some millionaire who can buy votes, she actually works for a living, hasn’t been given a silver spoon! Her husband works at a real job, not some cushy job that he didn’t earn, and come on what family doesn’t have problems. Let’s put your life in a fish bowl and see how well you do. I myself have enjoyed a new, fresh viewpoint with actual plans from Sarah. Oh, you want the Obama/Biden ticket –well you have it, what did Biden say yesterday? We (the Democrats) really didn’t know how bad the economy was. Where have they been? Possible attending the President’s kids birthday party in Europe? Talk about a bad economy, that we should be watching our costs??? hmmm. I guess we will have to collect our unemployment while DC parties.

Comment by: Nicole Larson Posted: July 7, 2009, 10:51 pm

Extremely well stated, Jason! Let’s hope she finally leaves the stage and quits whining. And, Lynette, I’m not quite sure what world you’re coming from, but you’re really out of touch. Palin has created the bulk of her own problems, but just wants to play the blame game.

Comment by: Jean Posted: July 8, 2009, 2:05 am

Lynette,
Get a life. Sarah is fake. A quitter. A choke artist when the going got tough. “Actual plans from Sarah?,” Lynette? Like her plans to “not blink” when it comes to going into Pakistan? Like her convulted, bs description of the bailout? Like the one where Palin can name a Supreme Court case that she disagreed with in an press interview? She probably can’t even spell Sonia Sotomayor correctly!

Btw Lynette, a lot of families have problems. But they don’t blame everyone else for them.

Comment by: Lynette Posted: July 8, 2009, 3:01 am

I find it curious that people are still wanting to destroy Palin. “Like her convulted bs description of the bailout?” Well the bailout’s going well isn’t it? You never commented on Biden’s remarks about the economy, don’t worry I’m sure we are in for another wonderful bailout. What description would you give about this bailout? I would also like to hear what you would say if someone photoshopped pictures of Obama’s children or your own? This is called “Cyber bullying”. We wonder where our children learned it? Why is it ok to pick on her children but not anyone else’s? I’m not sure you understand she lost the bid for Vice President 8 months ago. I can only imagine that the reason people are still going after her is because they are afraid of her. Well personally I hope she takes a sabitical, comes back in the arena.

Comment by: Mark Posted: July 8, 2009, 6:58 am

Jason, please. Your piece is exactly the kind of attack piece she is overwhelmed with. Why a personal attack? Do you consider yourself a “media elite”? If not, why respond? You should stick with sports and not act like a child with pieces like this. It isn’t uncommon for some men to be intimidated by strong, intelligent, women like Sarah. Since you are a “journalist” you might want to consider writing real news and not editorials outside your area of “expertise”.

Comment by: Vince Wallgren Posted: July 8, 2009, 7:51 am

Well written piece, Jason. But one must wonder why a sports reporter would be so overwrought because a supposed “whiner” resigned her position as governor of Alaska.

Do I smell the politics of personal destruction shrouded in fear?

Me thinks I do.

Should Sarah position herself as the coalescing agent between the disenfranchised constitutional conservatives (libertarians; Tea Party groups; Ron Paul; etc.), then I’d have to posit that your fear is more than justified.

A down-to-earth, one-of-us populist who also happens to be a communicator that connects with her audience … is a bona fide nightmare for the status quo, inside-the-beltway crowd.

I love it! You go girl!!

Comment by: Judith Seid Posted: July 8, 2009, 8:37 am

Jason,
It’s great to see a young journalist like you have such a mature outlook. Can you imagine if a man had made the same “hell ya” reference? It wouldn’t happen, because he wouldn’t want to embarrass himself that much. Thanks for sharing your gift and keep on writing!
Judy

Comment by: Judy in Poway Posted: July 8, 2009, 9:06 am

Yes! Thanks for speaking up on this matter… I, too, did not care for the other article on SDNN about how ‘brilliant’ it was for Palin to ‘cut and run’ (remember their term?).

Comment by: Charlie Posted: July 8, 2009, 9:26 am

Nice article, well stated. Of course, the Palin defenders take umberage. She’s such a victim. Boo hoo. Those gosh-darn media elites with their “gotcha” questions like which newspapers do you read. I’m sick of this fame-hungry air-head Barbie calling press conferences and scheduling interviews to complain about press coverage. If she’d just shut up and go away, she wouldn’t have these problems. In the meantime, as long as she keeps stepping in front of the camera and parading her family for the press, she needs to get a reality check and realize that she brings the public scrutiny on herself. Of course, she’s demonstrated time and again that she doesn’t understand the difference between sitting in the bright lights… and actually being bright. Go away now, Mrs. Palin. Just go back to obscurity and it’ll all be better.

Of course, that’s just my opinion. I pay attention.

Comment by: K.C. Posted: July 8, 2009, 10:29 am

Great piece. This was not a “hit piece”. This was the truth. How do I know? Because concerned citizens were writing about Palin way back when she was the mayor of a small, 5,000 people town. They actually started a recall campaign against her. The local paper said:

Wasilla found out it has a new mayor with either little understanding or little regard for the city’s own laws.

Palin seems to have assumed her election was indeed a coronation. Welcome to Kingdom Palin, the land of no accountability.

Mayor Palin fails to have a firm grasp of something very simple: the truth . . .

Wasilla residents have been subjected to attempts to unlawfully appoint council members, statements that have been shown to be patently untrue, unrepentant backpedalling, and incessant whining that her only enemies are the press and a few disgruntled supporters of former mayor John Stein.

____

It’s disturbing how Palin’s supporters don’t think the media should report on her. That would be a dictatorship, not a democracy. But she’s been using the “the media is picking on me” strategy to discredit the fact checkers for a very long time now.

And her base eats it up and sends their hard earned money to this woman whom they believe is “just like them”. Do they have 3 homes, a plane, boats, and other toys? Wow. I’m so out of touch with the middle class.

Republicans gave us this “just like you” package in Bush as well.

It’s sad to see people voting with their guts instead of their heads — and think about the amount of people who died because of it.

She puts on a heck of a show, though — and it must be good since her husband was a secessionist for 7 years and “patriots” vote for her.

There is no excuse for that, from the “I’ve always been proud of my country!” crowd.

I won’t back down either.

Comment by: Loren Nancarrow Posted: July 8, 2009, 11:57 am

Don’t let anyone pigeonhole you Jason. If you are able to express your political views in a clear, honest and concise manner like you did here, why not add political comment to your arsenal. Most of us can do more than one thing well.
Just one question concerning a comment above. Did Mark really describe Sarah Palin as “intelligent”? What part of her campaign for VP did you miss Mark? Pretty? Maybe. Good speaker? I’ll give her that. Flute player? Seems to be true. Intelligent? I’ll need some evidence.

Comment by: Ned Posted: July 8, 2009, 12:17 pm

I loathe the coming three years of Palin’s victim card and her wining about the media elite. It’s a tough road to be in the limelight. It’s not for everyone. But it is required to be President.

Comment by: Dave Lohse Posted: July 8, 2009, 12:29 pm

I am immensely proud to have been Jason’s mentor when he worked in the athletic communications office at the University of North Carolina as an undergraduate. Jason downplayed his humble beginnings. He is a real pull yourself up by the bootstraps sort of guy and has accomplished so much in his life it is amazing. I am proud to call him my friend and kudos for him to have the guts to write the truth. I too am from very humble backgrounds (my dad was a steelworker and my mom worked at KMart) and Sarah Palin doesn’t in any way speak for me and my family.

Comment by: Greg O'Neill Posted: July 8, 2009, 1:08 pm

All I can say is WOW–this is what I was thinking but couldn’t possibly have put into words any better. I’m not a media elite (hell, I’m not an elite anything) but I can sure smell hypocrisy from 20 paces and that is all I see coming out of the Republican Party these days—holier than thou positioning and rants with actions that just seem to have a lot of holes in them.

Comment by: Jean Posted: July 8, 2009, 1:37 pm

Palin’s response in TIME Magazine regarding health care:

“And health care too. I remember certainly on the campaign trail, John McCain and his ideas — basically, bottom line, allowing businesses to afford to pay for health care, to provide health care and to give employees options, and Obama scoffed at that. His campaign thought that that was ridiculous. It’s funny now to hear him kind of go to some of John McCain’s ideas.”

Good call, Sarah Quaylin.

Comment by: jason.owens Posted: July 8, 2009, 7:11 pm

Hmmmmm… I see a book tour coming. Thanks for the kind and not-so-kind words.

Comment by: Chris Stiehl Posted: July 8, 2009, 8:58 pm

Was the media fair to Palin? Read what a journalist has to say on AOL’s homepage, the you decide:
http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/07/08/sarah-barracuda-palin-and-the-piranhas-of-the-press/?icid=main|hp-laptop|dl1|link3|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.politicsdaily.com%2F2009%2F07%2F08%2Fsarah-barracuda-palin-and-the-piranhas-of-the-press%2F

The sad thing is, as he says, there is no journalism anymore. No one is “objective,” everyone is biased. No stories are checked, even once. Rumors get repeated by everyone, with no facts. Several national TV people said on air they thought the disabled child was really her daughter’s baby, with no evidence whatsoever. What does that have to do with her being VP anyway? How do you explain no one in the press exposing the dozens of lies and misstatements (chronicled in the AOL article) by Biden in the VP debate, even with respect to “security” where he is supposedly an “expert?” When asked “Who said she could see Russia from her home?” a very high percentage of young americans said “Sarah Palin,” when, in fact, she never said it, Tina Fey did.

Comment by: Justin Posted: July 8, 2009, 9:32 pm

Thank you for writing this. I’m so tired of the small but vocal masses that “don’t know what they don’t know”. If they think that Palin can run anything, including a state with a small population, then they are delusional. That said, I hope (and if I prayed I’d pray) that she’s the GOP candidate for 2012.

Comment by: Kathi Diamant Posted: July 8, 2009, 10:03 pm

Funny how Sarah was shouting from the rooftops before the election, now she is going to go crawl in a hole, on the other hand, Cheney was in a hole until Bush was gone and now he has crawled out of it and won’t shut up. Can someone tell me how a man who was the CEO of Halliburton, and was doing business with Sadam while Iraq was under sanctions got to be vice-president. It’s no wonder he was in agreement to go into Iraq. Sadam could have probably told us what business was conducted between them. Can he still be tried for that?

As a Mexican citizen living in Tijuana and a trans-border resident educated and working as an educator in our San Diego-Tijuana area for almost 60 years. I find it hard to fathom why some of the readers criticize your incursion into political writing. Not only are you exercising the universal right of freedom of expression, but a commendable act of civics by opining on an important figure in national politics.

As a journalist you can write on any subject, though specialized in a particular field; and as a citizen and “social animal” you cannot avoid offering personal comments or observations pertinent to your overall envionment: local, regional, national and global.

Being consistent and coherent, your readers have also exercised their right of expression, but its to the message and not the messenger that I direct my comments.

Is it possible that Palin might be a true statesman instead of a career politician like Joe Biden? Why not take a step back from your idealology and consider taking her at her word until you see evidence to the contrary? Nobody can make an honest arguement that defending frivolous lawsuits from deep pocketed special interests can be an expensive proposition.

Palin also seems to have enjoyed overwhelming support in her home state and Alaska certainly appears to be a state no less “hick” than say, Tennessee?

Politics, like the so-called Mother Earth Movement has become religion for some folks and your cliche writing style and resume should be submitted to its proper place at next months Comic Con.

Thank God for SDNN! I was afraid that all the left-leaning, Democrat-worshipping reporters that were dumped by the Union-Tribune, wouldn’t have a soapbox from which to spew their misogynist viewpoint of Sarah Palin anymore. Oh, I forgot…it’s only misogynist if you’re attacking LIBERAL women! Palin was never my idea of a perfect candidate, but it doesn’t take a genius to recognize that she has been subjected to the Saul Alinsky-inspired attack-and-destroy process employed so effectively by the Democrat Party and their willing accomplices, the mainstream media. I won’t call them the media elite…sophomoric, pedantic, mean-spirited would seem to be more accurate descriptions…elite, not so much! Oh, and by the way, MEOW! I know men are supposed to view women as inscrutable and mysterious, so we can be forgiven for not always understanding the fair sex…but the motivation of many women who proudly accept the title of liberal, is very transparent; if you’re a woman who has reservations about the death of a fetus, YOU MUST BE DESTROYED!
Have a nice day.

Comment by: Greg Gross Posted: July 9, 2009, 10:09 am

After looking at some of the comments on here, I looked up the U.S. Constitution to see if there was anything in that venerable and venerated document that bars a sportswriter from voting, or holding or expressing a political opinion.

Imagine my surprise: There was none.

Those who have a problem with Jason’s view of Sarah Palin would do better to focus on that view itself, rather than question his right to express it. As for Palin herself, I have to go to the store. I need some cheese to go with her whine.

Comment by: Curtis Deen Posted: July 9, 2009, 12:54 pm

All you Leftwing media elites who gave Obama a pass, prostituted yourselves. Palin is going to be around for a long time. Anyone the leftwing hates, I love. She represents Real American Patriotism; which most Americians embrace that our

Curtis, Curtis, Curtis…

“God bless Fox News”??? REALLY!?

Maybe you can help me, Curtis…because so far I’m drawing a complete blank from you Fox News champions. Explain “Fair & Balanced” to me, would you please?

And explain to me how you can be lied to, time and time again…ESPECIALLY by Hannity, but by some of the others, too (O’Reilly is a close second…Beck lies less, distorts and fear-mongers more)…and not be furious.

Palin? She’s earned every bit of bad press she’s gotten. And believe me, it’s not fear…it’s the inability to resist a ridiculously easy target who can’t stop putting her foot in her mouth.

Really, though…Fox lies are legendary, undeniable, and probably most frightening, consistently constant. (Or is that constantly consistent?)

And before you start raging about the ‘librul’ media…ever hear of News Corp?

Curtis…keep your beliefs, that’s fine. But please, for your own good and the good of everything you hold dear, take the blinders off - even for a day - and take a look at how often you’re lied to by Fox News. (Oh, you want an example? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xP14yxx8wEE

They should be ashamed for being so absolutely blatant…and you should be ashamed for buying it.

Comment by: EnriqueSDCA Posted: July 10, 2009, 7:15 am

Justin hit the nail right on! Hopefully the GOP will show their “talent” and get this insane woman the job of candidate for 2012. That will probably eradicate once and for all the “preservatives” and bring a very needed new Spring to our political arena.

Comment by: Tina Posted: July 10, 2009, 10:58 am

Bravo!! As a working mother of 3, I am repulsed by the “admiration” her followers grant her. If I asked my children if I should quit working, of course they would say yes!!! The way I see it, if you can’t handle the heat, get away from the fire. She is the first woman in history to get that close to being VP, did she seriously expect the media to “leave her alone”?? I thank God she wasn’t elected, because she obviously wouldn’t have been able to handle it. As for our economy, I think we all need to remind ourselves that this didn’t happen over night. We didn’t just wake up one morning with Obama as President and an economy in shambles. Honestly, America. Stop pointing fingers, band together (no matter which political party you claim), and fix it!!!!

Jason- it was nice to see you “cross-over” into the realm of politics. You have as much right as the people who are commenting on your opinion. And it is just that, an opinion.

Comment by: R Luitjens Posted: July 10, 2009, 4:39 pm

I don’t think it matters one iota what you write but there are far better and urgent subjects that I daresay you won’t touch. And if this Loren N is the the same that does the weather, stick with that where youv’e always done well. I don’t see you writing about the way our President and this Congress are as financially irresponsible as the past few generations who spent themselves into this current mess. If you dig a hole you have difficulty climbing out of, you don’t keep digging. To pass, and then enact bills that absolutely no one has read is so totally irresponsible that it should lead to unintended negative results. I would ask that everyone who puts us further in the hole: Really where is all the money coming from to pay for all these fun and games. The rich can’t pay it all, the middle class can’t pay it all, and the poor can’t pay at all. MAYBE YOU CAN EXPLAIN THAT IN YOUR NEXT STERLING ATTEMPT AT POLITICAL DISCOURSE!!!!

Comment by: J Scott Posted: July 16, 2009, 10:54 am

Good job, Jason! I think Palin is “armed and dangerous” in more ways than one. Since you wrote your article, several things have become more clear:
1. She’s no longer a regular little guy now that we know she’ll be paid $7 million for a book … sure hope she has a ghost writer and a good editor on that one! Can you imagine trying to diagam even one of her sentences? I had a major headache while trying to follow the thread of her ‘withdrawal as governor’ speech! (About that speech: I got the biggest kick out of seeing her in her red suit pausing for applause - thought there were tons of people there - and then the camera panned the audience: a couple of guys/kids in shorts and tees looking like they were ready for the hot dogs to come off the grill!)
2. She has announced that she has every intention of being available to jet around our great land helping others just like her get elected/reelected … if she has any takers on that.
3. And we can all sleep better at night knowing that she is on a vigil to make sure that our rights are protected all across this great land of ours … point guard or attack dog or whatever metaphor she’s using right now (I’m sure ‘maverick’ is in there somewhere).

She’s one of the reasons that I have reregistered as an Independent; have sworn off Fox News forever; and could not even begin to consider voting for John McCain.

Keep up the good work - as several others have said, maybe you should move over from the sports desk to the op/ed page!

What struck me as odd and somewhat unprofessional about Owens’ piece is not so much about the content, although one has to wonder why so much venom toward someone who hasn’t affected him personally, but that he felt he had to respond to a headline written by a coworker because he didn’t agree with it and thought we needed to know his reasoning. It’s the same feeling I get when I’m in a store and I have two employees near me bad mouthing another employee, a supervisor, their work hours or a supervisor disciplining an employee in front of me. I ask them to take it to the back office because it’s unprofessional; I feel awkward hearing it and it’s not good for business or morale. Owens could have voiced his disagreement over the printing of his co-worker’s opinion with SDNN management or with his colleague over a cup of coffee, e-mail, twitter or whatever other means instead of his employer’s storefront”, if you will. Of course, if you can hit two professional females with one stone…that certainly makes Palin’s point about the male “journalists” in the MSM - elite or fishwrap.

Well, let’s call it like it is. The United States has allowed over 50 million babies to be aborted. Do you know mother’s that have had children aborted have marked that day, year after year–wondering what that child would be like. Feeling the shame and guilt that they took a life. I just counseled a mother that wanted to go back and change her decision but she knew it was too late. Men are now coming out feeling the guilt, the wonderment of who their son or daughter would be. Mariana, you have no idea from where you speak. Every life, every person has rights–even the unborn!
