Sushi Deli 3 now open; form an orderly queue

San Diego: sushi1San Diego sushi enthusiasts already know about the bargains that can be had at Sushi Deli One on Washington Street in Hillcrest and Sushi Deli 2 on Broadway downtown. Now, there’s a new reason for thrifty diners to stand up and say “Domo!”

Sushi Deli 3 opened on Friday, July 3 in Kearny Mesa. Located at 7986 Armour Street, the new location features pretty much the same menu as its previous counterparts. Known for its inexpensive prices and wide variety of sushi rolls, hand rolls and nigiri options, Sushi Deli 3 is soon to become a community favorite, even in an area already loaded with wonderful Asian cuisine eateries.

Those in the know can attest that getting a table at either the Hillcrest or Downtown locations is a difficult task, especially at peak times. Wait times for a table of more than two people can typically take an hour or more, and even take out orders can run anywhere from 15-35 minutes.

A word of advice is to get to Sushi Deli 3 while it’s still relatively unknown - before too long, the crowds will come. In addition, Sushi Deli doesn’t take American Express, so it looks like Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres and Robert DeNiro will have to bring cash.

The competition: Convoy Sushi offers history and great fish too

The sushi is better than average, but not anywhere close to “excellent.” Basically, much like the two other links in the Sushi Deli chain, it’s a great value for what you’ll spend. My party of six, each of us getting our own individual rolls or bento boxes ran up a bill of only $68 (including tip).

I had a deluxe combo (the Keith Special, Ninja, Katie, and Ensenada rolls) and each one was very good. A great combination of flavors and a variety of different ingredients. Four pieces of each of those equals 16 pieces of sushi for only $9.99, which is right up my alley.

In addition, the miso soup is very tasty, and the fried tofu has a savory, yet not overpowering flavor to it. Good bargains to be had all around.

The new location is equally as small as One or 2, but does offer added outdoor covered patio seating, something the other locations don’t. It’s also close to the SDNN offices, so hopefully we’ll be able to come cash in a few more times before the inevitable cries of “yeah, Sushi Deli is good, but…” reach the Kearny Mesa area.
