I was so glad to read this knowledgeable post. I'm a baseball fan who certainly wants to get on with the game, but more than a month after the fact, I still couldn't get over what happened in San Diego. I was wondering if anyone had protested this atrocity. When I saw the incident on ESPN's SportsCenter, I was initially happy to see a beekeeper on site, apparently there to remove the bees safely. In the next five seconds, they show the bees being killed and dumped! I was shocked and appalled -- and wondered why the heck did they call a beekeeper to KILL the bees? I could have done that myself! Thanks again, beekeeping community, for stepping up to educate!

If the Stray dog was rabid they might shoot it....ANYWAY am I the only one who realizes that too many unwanted insects are simply PESTS?
Water is good to drink but too much of it creates FLOODING. "Oh but the water is so good for us"; NOT IN A BALL PARK SEAT. Neither are bees good in a ball park seat or inside your house. For that moment THEY ARE PESTS.

This is a very well written and informative article. It always amazes me that people seem to have so little regard for Bees.

There really needs to be more public education, that’s what makes this article such a gem…

Are you kidding me? If a stray dog ran on to the field, would you have addressed the situation with a shotgun?

One important note that hasn't been mentioned, is that San Diego is now home to Africanized Honey Bees, the so-called "killer bees". It's likely that a high proportion of the feral population of honey bees in San Diego are now Africanized. Africanized honey bees really have no place in our hive boxes, as they are more defensive, swarm more frequently, and generally put away less honey. While an AHB swarm may not be 'mean', as they build a colony, they become more defensive. It's impossible for anyone to visually ID by the way.

It sounds like the eradication was done improperly, but i wouldn't slam all eradications done in AHB areas. We perform them in a responsible manner, minimizing sting risk and liablility. We also perform some live removals, but it really does increase our exposure to a sting incident, thus we are very careful.
