Mission Hills may have lost Parallel 33 last January, but in July a new restaurant — The Red Door — will open in the former restaurant’s space on West Washington Street. San Diego restaurateur Ric Libiran (Market St. Café & French Bakery, Café Bleu) has partnered with Chef Brian Johnston (Star of the Sea Room, El Bizcocho, Top O’ the Cove, Mille Fleurs) to create what Libiran described as “an elegant but comfortable and casual neighborhood bistro.”
The menu will feature American comfort classics with a contemporary style of preparation, presentation, and use of fresh, quality ingredients, Libiran said. The Red Door’s wine list will focus on eclectic, small-production wines from around the world, offered by the glass and half glass.
The Red Door is located at 741 W. Washington St. More information about The Red Door can be found on the web site. — Caron Golden

We visited The Red Door shortly after it opened. Were we pleased? You bet!! The meals were excellent and the service the best in San Diego. We enjoyed a great cream of mushroom soup, lettuce wedge salad, brined pork chop (huge) and a San Diego version of jambalaya with shrimp and polenta. We passed on the dessert menu, but couldn’t resist a peek on our way out. Next time we’ll start with the sweets. We recommend this restaurant to everyone we can.

WOW. This post is a little late. My Family and I just arrived on vacation there from Richmond, VA and were taken straight to The Red Door Restaurant for lunch from the airport. This was in August, just after it had opened its doors apparently. The staff, the menu, why heck, everything was just awesome. We had a party of five with two children and we all had something different so we could sample. The hamburger (understatement at best) is the best burger that you will ever have in your life. To me just a plain ol’ large burger bun would have done me fine but that is my simple country taste. The chef came out and greated us and made sure that the children were good to go with their food… you know how children can be picky eaters. Again, everything just A W E S O M E.
