Getting into a bar in Utah has become a lot easier.
Bartenders in Utah threw open their doors Wednesday (July 1) as the state ditched a 40-year-old requirement that customers fill out an application, pay a fee and become a member of a private club before setting foot in a bar.
The old rules allowed membership applications to be filled out at the door – but separate memberships were required for each establishment.
In May Utah did away with an even weirder regulation — the so-called “Zion Curtain” law, which required bartenders at restaurants to mix drinks behind a partition, out of public view.
With a government historically dominated by Mormon church members, Utah was the only state in the country that enforced such laws. Legislators hope their repeal boosts tourism by making visitors feel more welcome — and making the state seem less odd to outsiders.
