Remember that scene is “The Player” when Tim Robbins and Greta Scacchi escaped the real world for mud baths and soaks at a lush hot springs resort? Their hideout was Two Bunch Palms Resort & Spa in Desert Hot Springs.
If you can stand the heat, now is a great time to go. Through July 31, the resort is offering a $200 spa credit for each night’s stay in a room with a rack rate of $200 or more. The maximum credit allowed per visit is $600 – a three-night stay.
Two Bunch sits on a lush palm oasis and is known for its adults-only tranquility, healing mineral waters and therapeutic spa treatments. The resort was named “Best for Mineral Springs” in Spa Finders Readers Choice awards for the past two consecutive years. SPA magazine readers also chosen it as their favorite mineral springs spa for two consecutive years.
The “$200 Free Spa Money” deal is valid any day – except during a July 3-11 blackout. Visitors must make room and spa reservations in advance. Phone (800) 472-4334. Learn more about the deal at TwoBunchPalms.com.
Terranea Resort offers sweet introductory rate - Posted 6/23/09
Get half off weekday rates at Southern California’s newest oceanfront resort – if you book by Sunday, June 28.
Terranea Resort, which opened June 12, is offering an introductory rate of 50 percent off for weekday stays – and 25 percent off Friday and Saturday night stays. With the discount, a king room with an ocean view costs $219 a night (including taxes and fees) from Sundays through Thursdays.
As long as you book by this Sunday, the deal applies for stays through Dec. 30 – but be forewarned that reservations are non-refundable and non-cancellable.
The 360-room resort sits on the Palos Verdes Peninsula (once the site of Marineland, for history buffs). Ninety percent of its rooms have full or partial views of the Pacific. There are three pools – one is dedicated to the 50,000-square-foot spa. The resort has seven restaurants and a golf course set to open in mid-July.

Southwest, Virgin battle at SFO; we win $38 fares - posted 6/20/09
Southwest and Virgin America are battling it out at San Francisco International Airport - and, for now, the winner is us.
Air fares between Lindbergh Field and San Francisco are as little at $38 each way right now on both airlines. Of course, the number of seats available at that price is limited - but both airlines are offering the low, low fare seven days a week through summer. (Though it’s tough finding availability on Sundays.)
There’s no telling how long the super sale will last. So act fast.
And remember, that at least for now, Southwest has the tactical advantage in this war: Check two bags for free on Southwest. And Southwest has no cancellation fees; though your ticket is not refundable, you’ll have a year to spend the money on a new ticket.
Virgin, on the other hand, has way cooler airplanes - most with wifi.

Free admission to National Parks and Monuments - posted 6/15/09
Finally, a government freebie for everybody: On specific weekends this summer, the National Park Service is waiving entrance fees at 147 national parks and monuments - including the Grand Canyon., Yosemite - and closer to home, Cabrillo National Monument.
Two more free weekends are slated: July 18-19 and Aug. 15-16.
“During these tough economic times, our national parks provide opportunities for affordable vacations for families,” said Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, when he announced the free weekends.
The Park Service estimates that the free weekends will mean a loss of about a half-million dollars a day from entrance fees that range from $3 to $25. A total of 147 parks and monuments charge entrance fees; the nation’s other 244 parks are already free.
The waiver applies only to entrance fees and does not affect charges for camping, reservations, tours or concessions.
