County animal officials are looking for the owner of a Saluki dog that turned up in Valley Center and was traced through a microchip to a military training center in Saudi Arabia.

The dog, a male believed to be 5 or 6 years old, was found June 15, according to the county Department of Animal Services. The animal had a microchip that wasn’t registered to an individual, but the manufacturer confirmed that it was sold to the United States Military Training Mission, headquartered in Saudi Arabia, according to Animal Services.

Animal Services officials, so far, have not been able to trace the microchip through military sources.

“We are hoping the owner will hear about this and come forward to claim their pet,” said Laurie Joniaux, deputy director of San Diego County’s Department of Animal Services. “Often times, when unregistered, we hit a dead end. In those cases, if no owner comes forward, the animal can be adopted out to a new home.”

To claim the dog, the owner will need to show proof of ownership, such as vaccination certificate, import documents and/or photos of him or her with the animal, according to the county.
