It may be a stretch but for some reason reading that 9,000 and over dogs and cats were euthanized in 2003-2004 and then a decrease to 7,000 and over cats and dogs were in 2009 there is such a feeling of genocide.

It's like we are mass producing them and we are then killing them when no one buys one. This is a really dark underbelly to the economy. That people profit from treating life with such disregard.

They may do it differently in other countries but lets keep that out of our country. Just like rabies is a disease that is not in Australia along with other countries. This idea of treating animals like commodities is a disease being bred into the minds of people looking for a way to make money though are changing the nature of our society by doing so.

We need to stand against inhumane treatment of these animals. Find something else to sell because frankly it exploits Americans as implusive and inconsiderate if you are willing to buy and animal simply on a whim and its cute then to not want to or be able to care for it.

Dominique, I completely agree. Police should focus their time on more important things! Because they're not human, some individuals think it's OK. They are ALIVE, they're smart and they feel!

This makes me sick, along with the people who force their poor animals to be pregnant constantly for cash. To me, this is worse than drug trafficking!

This is one of the MOST outrageous ideas I've ever heard of. Killing companion animals to save money. It's even worse than the ridiculous HSUS-sponsored legislation recently passed in CA. Come on California. Get a grip.

Lowell, I think one part of what you state may be correct--shelters won't be required to kill the animals at 3 days, but allowed to. Fact is they won't receive funds for anything over 3 days, so their operating funds will be severely impacted and far fewer programs like spay and neuter clinics, educational outreach, etc. will be maintained. You lost me when you began the HSUS and PETA rant. I think it is a non sequitur...makes no sense to me. Who cares what PETA and HSUS think about anything?

Apparently, it's ok to insist that every dog and cat in California be sterilized, and to insist that every shelter keep FERAL cats and vicious dogs for more than three days despite the impossibility of placing them but it's wrong to give shelters the OPTION to kill unadoptable dogs or cats. The shelters won't be REQUIRED to kill at 3 days, they will be ALLOWED to. At the same time HSUS and PETA argue it's ok to go door to door demanding that owners turn over any animal over the "authorized limit" and urge passage of laws banning "display" of live animals on a public street, park or right of way, they want to keep animals in an overcrowded, under funded shelter that wouldn't pass USDA inspection on it's best day. Hypocrisy, anyone?

Stop using the word "euthanizing" or "put to sleep". Call it what it is--KILLING. The Governor's proposal is another example of politicians further victimizing the voiceless. No doubt about it, more dogs and cats who could find forever homes or be reunited with their owners in six days will be killed because the time frame for a hold is shortened to three or four. Ever searched for a lost pet? Sometimes they wind up in the strangest places and it takes a while for the paperwork and pictures to show up on a website. A private rescue group that I work with, Second Chance Dog Rescue, placed 118 dogs in "forever" homes in the month of May--they were all on death row at regional shelters. All are now neutered, vaccinated, licensed and have had health exams by volunteering professionals. This article correctly assesses the problem: money needs to go to the source of the problem which is education to spay and neuter, prohibit backyard breeders and puppy mills and encourage responsible ownership. You have to ask yourself --could I kill a puppy, a voiceless victim to save a few dollars?

This is easy; since Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's career in Sacramento is almost over, could we euthanize his stay in office and he can go back to making over expensive movies that no one will watch.
