Montelena Neighborhood: The Jeffcoats break ground to rebuild their home
Friends gathered to watch them throw the first shovelfuls
Kendra and Jay Jeffcoat have broken ground to rebuild their Montelena home. They put on their hard hats and picked up shovels with their builder, Jay Riordan, to throw those first shovelfuls of dirt.
Their many friends joined them for a champagne toast to welcome their new beginning.
The Jeffcoats were out of town when the 2007 Witchcreek fires swept through Rancho Bernardo damaging and/or destroying completely 365 homes in Rancho Bernardo.
Since October 2007, the Jeffcoats have lived first in Pacific Beach and more recently in Point Loma, but they are looking forward to retuning to their view of Battle Mountain and, on a clear day, the cars on Del Dios Highway all the way across Lake Hodges.
The rebuilt home will be slightly larger than the one that was lost and it will include outside decks in both the front and back of the house, so they can welcome sun in the morning and watch it set in the afternoon.
In what they laughingly call a mixed marriage (he is a Kiwanian and she has just completed her term as president of the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary), they will celebrate their 41st anniversary next month and hope to be in their rebuilt home before the end of 2009.
To read about another family, the Van Heels, who also were out of town in October 2007 and what we all should do before we leave…just in case …, read the story at the bottom right side of our home page this week.
Rancho Bernardo Fire Recovery Stats:
Surprising as it may seem, only 125 families had moved home as of April 2009, according to the city. Of the remaining 200 families, over 90 families have yet to pull permits in Rancho Bernardo.
Go to the top of this story and post a comment telling us all your story about the weekend of the fires. Everyone has their own story and it’s part of what we want to share.
