Khalil Greene, the former Padres star shortstop, is headed for a new challenge in his career.
Greene, battling social anxiety disorder and currently on the St. Louis Cardinals disabled list is moving to a new position.
The ex-shortstop has agreed to move to third base, while extending his rehab assignment with the Cardinals minor league affiliate Memphis in the International League.
Greene, who left the Cardinals two weeks ago to begin intense counseling for violent outbursts that led to injuries and because of his poor play, played two games with Memphis last week at shortstop. He hit 4-for-8 but committed two errors. He left Memphis on his own and flew to St. Louis to meet with Cardinals executives.

The club has decided not to allow him to remain with the major league team but asked him to consider returning to the minor leagues and move to a new position. He committed nine errors in the field this year, including seven with the Cardinals.
He was batting just .200 when benched in St. Louis with his ongoing anger management problems. They reached a height last year when he broke his hand punching a locker while with the Padres. He was suspended, then traded by San Diego to the Cardinals in the off season.
