‘Idol’ chat: Q&A with David Cook
The singer makes his solo debut in San Diego, June 18

Auditioning on a whim for “American Idol” in August 2007 got David Cook further than he had ever imagined. Originally there to support his younger brother Andrew, David was then encouraged to try out as well. Thanks to his rich, raw vocals and devotedly powerful performances, millions of fans watched as rocker David Cook took the title as “American Idol” for Season 7, winning with 56 percent of the votes.
The week following his win, Cook made history on Billboard’s Hot 100 list, placing 11 songs on the charts. This gave him the highest number of new singles in a week, the most since the Beatles placed 14 songs in 1964. Continuing on with his success, he debuted his album in November 2008, which was certified Platinum; and by January 2009, exceeded over one million copies in sales.
When I first heard that David was coming to the San Diego County Fair I knew I had to get tickets. However, I knew I had to find out more about this down to earth, humble, gorgeous man. Is he really who he seems to be when we see him on television? I set out on a mission and was ecstatic when word came to me that I landed a phone interview with the “Idol” winner.
It’s 3:30 p.m. eastern time, and David Cook is eating Frosted Mini Wheats — the first thing he has eaten all day, actually. We are chatting via phone while he is in Columbus, Ohio on his way to perform in Newark, Ohio. His voice is just as deep and melodic over the phone as is it on TV.

Talking with him makes me all giddy inside, but I don’t want to come across as a crazed fan either. However, the minute I start talking to him, it’s like we’re old friends. He is one of the most laid back, genuine guys I have ever met. I know right away that he is the real deal: truly an American Idol.
SDNN’s question: Are you excited to be coming out to San Diego?
David Cook’s answer: Absolutely. I got a chance to get out to San Diego when we came through on the Idol tour and it seemed like a beautiful city. I think we walked around and you guys had like an Urban Outfitters somewhere and we walked around there. Carly (Smithson) tried to give me the big ole’ dime tour as best as she could.
Q: What has life been like since American Idol?
A: Best word I can use is non-stop. We’ve literally been go go go for about a year and a half now. I’m very excited. Actually after this week I get a two week break before we come to San Diego, so very excited. I should be well rested for San Diego.
Q: How do you think your life will change now since passing on the American Idol torch?
A: Hopefully it doesn’t. I’ve enjoyed being as busy as I have been. We’ve been able to play a lot of great shows and hopefully we keep putting out good music and playing good shows and everything else will continue to fall into place the way it has.
Q: What is it that surprised you most of the fame from winning, either negatively or positively?
A: Really just that so many people seem to care, I guess, about everything. What songs were playing at a particular show, what color our hair is, what shirt were wearing… it’s neither good or bad, but it’s just kind of like - really??!
Q: What is your favorite or the most gratifying aspect of what you do?
A: I think that’s two-fold… That we get to create something. I love creating things. And secondly, that we perform a special service, you know what I mean. I think our job is to go on stage every night and try and entertain people and when we get to pull it off that’s one of the most gratifying aspects.
Q: Coming from the simple life as a bartender, to now being thrown into this fame… Has it had any changes on you as a person?
A: Well I’ve forgotten how to make a lot of drinks which is a problem, but I guess past that … It’s opened my eyes up. I’ve become a lot more observant just to everything, I think … learned to appreciate everything around me.
Q: What motivates or drives you as a person and as a performer?
A: I think like for all of us … is making my family proud.
Q: Now for the fun questions… Who has been the coolest/most fun celebrity you’ve met?
A: David Archuletta.
Q: Oh please no…
A: What?? That dude’s famous, man. You wanted a fun question, I gave you a fun answer.
Q: Are you guys still friends?
A: Yeah, absolutely. We actually just finished up a show in the Phillipines a couple weeks back, and we got a chance to catch up. He’s a good guy.
Q: Favorite food?
A: Right now, Frosted Mini Wheats…
Q: I knew you were going to say that!
A: Hey it’s the first thing I’ve had to eat all day… I will say chicken taquitos from a place called Quick Trip… I don’t think they have them in San Diego.
Q: Favorite movie?
A: “The Jerk”…I love “The Jerk.”
Q: Do you still do crossword puzzles to unwind?
A: Crossword Puzzles, Soduko… Yeah pretty much all those nice USA Today Games.
Q: Have you had any crazy experiences with over-excited fans?
A: (laughs) We actually had our first bra thrown on our stage not too long ago. It landed on our bass player Joey’s bass. I feel like we hit a milestone.
Q: Have you had the panties yet?
A: We’ve had the panties … We’ve had the panties in mass. But that was our first bra.
Q: Making it big now!
A: Yeah, it was a special moment for the band, I felt like we bonded.
Q: Where would you like to be with your music in five or 10 years?
A: Hopefully employed, that would be nice. I think the whole goal for me and for this band is that we want to make good music and play good shows, and hopefully, hopefully, you know, everything will continue.
Q: Who has influenced you musically?
A: Everybody. I think that’s part of what I’ve really learned from this whole process is just to kind of be observant of everything… Family, friends, strangers, everything in between.
Q: What is it that you would want people to know about you that they don’t see superficially?
A: Nothing, man. I kind of pride this whole thing on being a little bit transparent… I’m hoping people see me accurately.
Q: If you could give one message to performers trying to “make it big,” what would you tell them?
A: That sometimes it’s a good thing to hear “No” ninety-nine times before you hear “Yes” once.
Q: Be honest, do these interviews get old… I know you are doing them like 24/7?
A: Um, they can… This one is actually kind of refreshing. I don’t get these questions asked a whole lot.
Q: And last question… All the girls in San Diego will want to know…Is David Cook single?
A: I’ll never tell … I will never tell.
There you have it; what you see is what you get! A legitimately nice guy — and funny too — with dominant vocals and bold heartfelt songs, he is here to share his talent with his fans. Don’t miss your opportunity to see him live at the San Diego Fair, Del Mar. June 18, 7:30 p.m. on the Heineken Grandstand Stage.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this man! Don’t miss any chance you get to see David Cook and his band. They put on a fantastic concert! It’s very rare that a band sounds even better live. David Cook’s voice is like none other! You will NOT be disappointed.

How lucky to interview David Cook! Great questions, and of course, utterly charming responses from DC! What an unassuming and funny man!
Comment by: Cougar40n Posted: June 11, 2009, 7:14 pm
Nice interview, Stephi — yeh, you’re right that some of these interviews MUST get old but at least you had clearly given this some thought — and he appreciated it. What I love — among other things - is that even though DC had been asked some of these questions many times (favorite food, who has influenced you, how have you changed, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned)he doesn’t go on autopilot — he treats most questions like he’s never heard them, and he often gives new answers based on what he thinks at the time — like today it was cereal and The Jerk. ALSO, it’s honest - not what he thinks people would like him to say in order to sound cool or like a Rocker. You got this right Steph — he’s the real deal.

David is just the best! American idol should be thrill to have such a charming, witty, talented, special man to represent….Loved the interview, great questions. I can imagine how hard it was to cover up the giddiness.
I couldn’t agree more that David and band sound even better live, always a great show! Have fun….

Stephi, very nice job and very refreshing to see smart questions asked LOL!
Jesse, yes this dude has music out… all over the radio: Light On, Come Back to Me and The Time of My Life… and another single Permanent that was released to raise money for a cancer research charity. His music is played mostly on Adult Top 40 and to a lesser extent, Top 40 (CHR).

David is really a nice guy. I have met him and he sounded just that same as in this interview. Good job on the interview by the way.
Jesse, don’t know what kind of music you listen to, if any, but David’s album went platinum in 3 months. He has been played on the radio and charting since his album was released in November. Actually, his coronation single, The Time Of My Life, the most successful in Idol history has been on the radio since June ‘08 and is still on the recurrent charts. I’m afraid his boat sailed right over your head.

Actually, doesn’t Andy Warhol’s “everybody will be famous for 15 minutes” concept apply more to things like these smarta$$ comments?
Cook continues to be news, which is the point!

Nice article and interview; David Cook is the real thing! Funny, I hear Cook’s music played quite a bit and he’s been in the #1 and 2 spots on VH1 for his CBTM video. Oh, and glambert rocks…I like Adam too but there’s no reason to trash David. Even Adam appreciates David…”Adam Lambert names David Cook as one of his Idol inspirations”

Great interview. I like it so much better when the person asking the questions actually likes and respects the person they are interviewing. I am a huge David Cook fan. Absolutely love him and wish I lived anywhere close to San Diego. I would be there. Have fun to all of you who are close enough to go. You won’t be disappointed. The guy can sing and is just a fantastic performer. The band is hot, too. Thanks for the interview.

to glambert rocks: there’s a difference between flash-in-the-pan recognition and longevity. Cook has longevity. That’s why he won AI. That’s why his album went platinum in 3 months in a time when more people steal music than BUY it. That’s why his shows sell out. That’s why his album is the #1 debut album this year and in the top 7 up against superstars like Britney, Beyonce, Nickleback, etc. His boat will sail for a long time because he is a genuinely talented, hard-working musician/artist, not a flash-in-the-plan. Longevity… Cook will outsell and outlast Lambert. And in case you didn’t actually read the RS article, Lambert admits to riding Cook’s coat tails and good for him. He studied and copied from the best and at least it got him 2nd place this year.

Great interview & good questions. What a down to earth nice guy he is.
In variably though, these interviews always attract people who have an agenda to diss the person who is being showcased. Why go somewhere you aren’t interested in?
glambert rocks: David Cook riding on Adam’s coatails? Old News? Shakes head is disbelief. You’ll find that Cook will outsell and outlast Lambert after all is said and done. Cook is an artist & a musician & a song writer and he’s an incredible dramatic tenor who knows not to go OTT if it doesn’t call for it just for the affect. He is down to earth, hard working and not contraversial. He ranks up there with Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry & Carrie Underwood when it comes to Idol winners & runner-ups. Adam didn’t even win the competition & at this point even Kris is getting more airplay on the radio than Adam. I find nothing original about Adam though he did put on a great Vegas act during the competition.

I love David Cook so much that it is impossible to describe. He is the cleverest, most original, most talented and most interesting person American Idol ever had and will ever have. He is not only an outstanding singer/writer, his macho yet sensitive voice, those eyes and that smile just makes you feel every one of the words sang from his songs. He always make me feel like I just want to know him as a very special friend and how lucky his fans have all been that he came to join AI and we got to discover him. Never feel this way about any of the other idols even if they have had hits… somehow he is so special.

David Cook is the dareman, riding his dark horse and gallopping his way to dream street! Where he stops… no one knows! As close to the stars as possible! Why?? Because David, My Last American Idol has done it HIS way! By writing, producing, choosing heavy hitters to assist…but most of all for singing his heart and soul out directly into the hearts and souls of all who listen! He is a refreshing, unbelievable talent who bares his emotions, wears his heart on his sleeve is is proud to be humble and honest! I, for one.. have found music again in a special way.. so thank you God for this blessing named David Cook, who just keeps on paying it forward with his heart, soul and passion. Im lovin ALL that he is and know David Cook will be rocken worlds for many years to come! After a year and half, I believe his journey has taken on a whole NEW thunder!! And lets not forget just how gorgeous and sexy this MAN is!! Does he even know his greatness? I sure do ~ the life I knew has forever changed! ~ ~ Carole ~ NYC

Hey, glambert rocks — your boy sure couldn’t break any of Cook’s records from last year and actually neither did Kris. Cook outsold both of them combined so how is Cook possibly riding Lambert’s coattails?? Seriously, get a grip on reality and stick to your Lambert blogs if you’re delusional. You only reflect negatively on your favorite and, of course, Adam has even credited Cook for inspiring him to try out for Idol. He can be gracious about it, too bad his fans can’t be.
Comment by: kcool Posted: June 22, 2009, 4:06 pm
Laura:
You go girl!! Maybe we should remind these Adam Lambert fans (ie glambert rocks) about how much Cook’s A.I. songs sold in the two weeks it was available. Over 1 million downloads in two weeks so his A.I. Songs/Album would have gone platinum in 2 weeks. Don’t think Adam can claim that nor Kris & Adam combined. It’s probably a record if you ask me. However, again, I find it incredible that fans of one “runner-up” can actively go to A.I. winner sites and diss that person. I love a lot of previous A.I. winners & contestants and would never dream of comparing or “dissing” them. Each person is unique, their sound unique & it’s a matter of taste. These glamberts are just OTT and you are right, it does reflect negatively on Adam Lambert. People get turned off that kind of stuff.
