I know I'm coming across this late but still amazed that people are still acting like MC (I use the term loosely) Flow is a legitimate Hip Hop artist. I guess it's the water in certain areas in San Diego because I doubt anyone outside this biased city would give her and her form of "Hip Hop" the time of day. Note to all writers in San Diego: DO YOUR RESEARCH. SAN DIEGO IS BUDDING WITH AMAZING LEGITIMATE HIP HOP ACTS! I'm so sick of this. I finally saw her perform at the Casbah a few months back when they had a line-up of Hip Hop artists (and "MC" Flow too) and I thought it was a joke! I was honestly offended by the mockery they made of a culture I've loved and lived in for the majority of my life. Ever heard of MIKI VALE, an amazing FEMALE artist who rhymes circles around the great white hype? Ever heard of DEEP ROOTED, a group whose shows are a spectacle of pure showmanship and talent and have toured around the world? DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! Howcome we all know about the good Hip Hop artists from San Diego but the writers can only seem to locate "MC" Flow every time it's time to write an article???

@Judith: No mention of San Diego opera singers?! Um, beg pardon, but Edward Wilensky is right: DIAMANDA GALAS is the greatest opera talent to come from San Diego, ever!

@Judith: While we agree that the singers on the San Diego Opera stage are the best international singers in the world, we need to remember that they are international artists and not local by any means and therefore not suited to this list.

@Will: Let us get you started on your education about opera next season when LA BOHEME opens. Have Valerie get you in touch with me.

GREAT to see some Diamanda Galas love here, one of the most singularily unique artistic experiences in my life.

JP: Didn't "miss" GOP's Kristin at all -- in fact, she was in the top 10 as I whittled down to the final 8. But, like I said in my lead, this list is nowhere near "definitive."

Notice, it's "Eight Great" -- NOT "The Eight Greatest"...

TeaLSea: Heard the "rap is not music" argument before -- and while I'll bend over backwards to validate your right to have different taste in music, by definition and intuition, rap and hip hop are most certainly music, that IS A FACT. Understand if you're not as impressed with its forms and idioms as you are with those displayed by Sara Watkins, though -- and I knew including MC Flow would be a divisive choice. Thanks so much, sincerely, for contributing to the debate. :-)

True, Judith: there are two reasons (one may be an excuse) I did not mention the prodigiously talented women of San Diego's opera community. The first is, for some reason, pop music and classical/opera have long been covered in separate sections of the arts in most media pulbications. The second is, I know *I* am in NO WAY qualified to comment insightfully on the opera or classical music genres in San Diego -- at least not yet. SDNN.com does have critics who cover the opera beat, however: I think it would be great if they compiled a similar listing to recognize the tops in those fields, too!

I, for one, could start my education there!

Thanks so much fo your comment, too, Judith!

You didn't mention any of the women who sing regularly with the San Diego Opera. I doubt that any of the women you mentioned above sing nearly as well.
