More than 200 pounds of marijuana was found in duffel bags Thursday and six men suspected of transporting the drug into the country by boat from Mexico were arrested in Imperial Beach, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.
Two sheriff’s deputies on foot patrol spotted three of the men wearing life jackets hiding in some rocks on the shoreline at the end of Seacoast Drive around 2 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Gary Steadman.
Three more men were found waiting in two separate vehicles in the area, apparently waiting to pick up the first three men and several duffel bags hidden in the rocks, Steadman said.
The duffel bags contained wrapped bundles of marijuana weighing more than 200 pounds, he said. It appeared the drug was brought into the country by boat, according to Steadman.
“Unfortunately, it’s something that’s becoming more and more common,” he said.
Three of men arrested Thursday morning were illegal immigrants and the other three were Mexican nationals in the United States legally, Steadman said.
