These young scholars were selected on the basis of the breadth and depth of the subjects they studied, their successful completion of Advanced Placement courses, unusually high grade point averages, very high SAT scores, strong teacher recommendations, and leadership in activities benefiting both their school and their community.
Professor Don Lisio, who chairs the Rotary Scholarship Committee, referred to each of them “as exemplifying the motto of Rotary International: ‘Service Above Self’ ” and predicted that they would be “future community leaders.” The students gave short presentations about their choice of college and their educational and career goals.
The Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo also honored the parents of the scholarship winners and their teachers and academic counselors for their preparation and guidance of these outstanding young people.
Said Barbara Baldwin, RB Rotary President-Elect; “These young people are to be commended for their dedication to creating a brighter tomorrow, just as their teachers, counselors and parents should be lauded for helping the youth of today become a generation of future leaders.”
The RB Rotary Club meets at noon on Thursdays at the Bernardo Heights Country Club, and can be found online at www.rbrotary.org. Prospective members are always welcome. For more information call President Dan Malloy at 858-245-2412.
