San Diego County Fair 2009 Guide

Editor’s Note: This guide was  updated on June 5, 2009. It includes information on additional discounts for admission as well as information on access for the disabled.

The 2009 San Diego County Fair will be operating from June 12-July 5, 2009.

Every summer, thousands of people participate in the San Diego County Fair as vendors, performers, competitive exhibitors, sponsors, employees, and of course, as visitors. In other words, a whole lot of people get involved in the daily activities of the San Diego County Fair.

Some people, both locals and tourists alike, still refer to this annual summer event as the Del Mar Fair.  A few years back, the Del Mar Fair was renamed the San Diego County Fair in order to capture all of San Diego County, and not just the lovely coastal City of Del Mar.

This year’s fair celebrates “Music Mania” and will include music from a wide variety of sources including marching bands to garage bands. In fact, the fair will feature nearly 24,000 performers and entertainers, from nationally known bands to children’s dance troupes. Musicians of all genres and ages will be showcased and appreciated by thousands of people.

Be sure to use this handy calendar of events to help you select which days you would like to attend the San Diego County Fair.

San Diego County’s annual fair features all the normal stuff you would expect to find: garden shows, gadget shows, animal talent and human talent competitions, hobby and craft exhibits, pie-making and pie-eating competitions, carnival rides, and live music throughout the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Suffice to say, a feast for the eyes and ears, not just the stomach.

Speaking of the stomach, let’s talk about the real reason many people go to the fair - THE FOOD. We go for the gooey, crunchy, high-carb, high sodium, high fat, and nutrition-deficient food. In other words, everything your doctor and dentist tell you not to eat. But isn’t that what makes it even more fun? So, get your groove on and enjoy every delicious and sinful morsel. Take comfort in knowing that there is a lot of ground to cover at the San Diego County Fair so you will be getting some exercise.

Here are some great ways to save money on food at the Fair. We really like the “$2 Taste of the Fair Tuesday” which allows you to graze through participating food vendors’ booths and sample a cream puff, a fried zucchini, some freshly fried potato chips, etc.

The other reason many people flock to the San Diego County Fair is the big musical acts that pay a visit to our fair San Diego. Most of the concerts are free with your paid admission to the Fair and most of them begin at 7:30pm. This year, the concerts that require tickets in addition to fair admission include Melissa Etheridge, David Cook, David Archuleta, and Kelly Clarkson.

Concert early line-up and admission is allowed for people needing assistance.  Please let the Ambassadors (staff in blue shirts or jackets) or Fair staff know that you need assistance.
