Why can't the plastic be retrieved from the gyre? Why can't we put a small tax on plastic and use the money to send barges out there to clean it up like we do for hazardous sites on land? Why not create a Superfund for the oceans?

So, let me get this straight...We're melting the poles, hunting the wild life into extension, burning the rain forests, fishing the oceans dry, frying the air and now there's a Texas-size-mostly-plastic island floating in the Pacific? That’s pretty much the gist of where we find ourselves, right? So who’s going to fix all this? Now, the last time I watched he news the political parties in the country I live in (USA) couldn’t even stand being in the same room long enough to decide who was will to sit next who, much less address just one of the above on a national level, never mind an international level. So? One more question if you don’t mind, and I’d sincerely love to hear from anyone who has a ‘based on tangible evidence’ answer. Should I believe that the people of the earth are going to actually do a collective ‘about face’ so to speak and save the for earth, or should I believe what the bible people that come to the door say, “god will bring to ruin ‘those’ ruining the earth”… better know as save the earth ‘from us’?

The least that can be done is passing legislation in the states (eventually, national) that bans the use of plastics except where they are absolutely essential for certain products.
