Tenor Griffey is in tune with ‘Peter Grimes’

The star of a new San Diego Opera production sits down for a video conversation with SDNN's theater critic.

When: 7 p.m. April 18 and 21; 8 p.m. April 24; 2 p.m. April 26
Where: San Diego Civic Theatre, 1100 Third Ave., downtown
How much: $35 to $200

Editor’s note: Acclaimed tenor Anthony Dean Griffey has made a specialty of “Peter Grimes,” portraying the emotionally tormented title character at such leading venues as New York’s Metropolitan Opera and the Opéra National de Paris. Now he’s slated for San Diego Opera’s first production of the Benjamin Britten masterwork since 1985.

During a recent rehearsal break, SDNN theater critic Pat Launer sat down with Griffey for a wide-ranging conversation that was captured on video. They spoke about everything from how he approaches such a complex singing/acting challenge to why he watches cartoons to help take his mind off the intensive preparation. And as you’ll see, Griffey is a whole lot nicer than Grimes.
